Flyers Daily with Jason Myrtetus 12-9-2025 Flyers vs Sharks Preview and More
Flyers Daily with Jason Myrtetus: Preview of the Flyers vs Sharks game tonight as the second half of a 6 game homestand rolls on. Plus a response to a very interesting Flyers Fan email about the development of Matvei Michkov.
I agree that now is a time to learn a lot about where the team is. I think the gaps in schedule have been helpful. It has allowed for more practice time under Tocchets system. That is super important. Now that they know the system fairly well, bring on the more condensed schedule.
thank you THANK YOU for your response at the end. And like as an oilers fan as well, let me tell you this is a BIG team sport and no one knows that more than Connor McDavid himself (and Leon Draisaitl)
The comment of saying if Michkov doesn’t reach his peak means we lost a decade of flyers hockey is hilarious and shouldn’t even be taken into consideration. I like grebenkin but given a fourth line that’s competent there are points to be had. The acquisition of vladar is a huge step this year along with Zegras’s production.
Nega-delphians strike again. Not sure how a reporter for the team who consistently engages with the community comment section and actively encourages a community voice doesn’t understand what the fans want. Do your thing Jason.
Can you name one other player who Philadelphia drafted that was HIGHLY sought after, highly decorated, high skilled, was extremely well coached and developed and made the Flyers camp, only a few years later to end up being done with the flyers or the NHL as a whole?
Maybe Nolan Patrick? Or Jay O’Brian? Or Joel Farabee?
Interesting and important topic today. Good stuff.
MM39s time on ice is irrelevant. Tocchet is trying to teach the kid (probably for the first time in MMs hockey life) to commit to team defense and to not pull up on the flanks upon getting the puck over the offensive blueline (his natural inclination). This is the only way that Matvei becomes the next Kucherov or Kaprizov. And once he does master those couple of skills…watch out! The sky is the limit.
Jase…does the call up of Ty Murchison mean that the head coach thinks the Flyers have been too easy to play against, especially in the defensive zone? Tocchet says that he is trying to build culture and having players that are hard to play against on the squad seems to be one of the ways Tocc builds culture. The HC said that one of the few things that he knows about Ty is that the vets thought he was a super PITA to play against in camp, due to Ty's compete level.
You’re right Jason it’s not about average time on ice however it is about power play time and Michkov is not getting enough power play time. He should be playing on the first power play unit with Zegras and given a chance to be successful. Michkov also needs to be out there in all 6 on 5 chances, and be out there in OT a lot more. I don’t care about his conditioning at the start of the season, he's had plenty of time to work himself into shape. Michkov needs to be out there just like every other top young player around the league is, like Bedard, Celebrini, Gauthier, etc. Michkov was touted as the 2nd best player behind Bedard in his draft class, yet he is far behind Bedard and Carlsson, and even behind Will Smith. I mean, Michkov has only 1 point more than Noah Cates in 27 games, and that is just unacceptable! The Flyers have to live with the mistakes and keep putting the kid out there if he is going to reach his ceiling. The Flyers can't afford to miss on or mess up yet another prospect.
The Flyers need a better 4th line! Imagine if the Flyers had a 4th line that could actually put up a few extra goals. This team is too good to get a shot at a lottery pick. The difference between being a playoff team and finishing 17th with no shot at a top pick is the 4th line scoring a few extra goals to steal some much needed points.

Jason have you had a chance to watch Askarov in net? He stands like a statue until play comes to him. He also always has his stick off the ice until he has to make a move. At least when i saw him earlier this year he did this. If you notice this tonight let me know your thoughts on his style!
Jason I think the thing that you’re missing here is the generational gap, the “fans” that are calling for more, more, more are most likely the instagram/ticktock people that get their gratification instantly and do not understand the steps needed to be great in any type of career. There are very few that burst on the scene and are legitimate superstars
19:24 I’ve heard you say this before, about being a fan of the team and not player, and it made me reflect on my fandom to concur that I am indeed a Flyers fan first and foremost. That struck home when Lindros left for the Rangers. That day, he was dead to me. I packed up all of my Lindros gear, the hockey card collection of Lindros got mothballed so indeed, I chose team over player. I can honestly say I would do the same with Michkov, IF, he ever leaves Philly. I love his enthusiasm and obvious talent that he injects in THE TEAM from Philly. I do care if THE TEAM misuses or handles him wrong, of which I DO NOT think they’re doing as this time but I want him to grow and succeed IN PHILLY. If he leaves, he’ll be dead to me as far as fandom goes.
The last 17 Stanley Cup winners have a #1 or #2 overall pick outside of the Blues in 2019 that had the #4 pick on the same team. Hockey is about building around the best player just like any sport. The Panther has a #1 pick, 2 #2 picks, 2 #4 picks and a #6 pick. There is no wonder they have been to 3 str8 Cups. Now two of those players are hurt and they arent winning as much. There is a correlation.
Excellent episode. The guy who said you're out of touch with the fans is bonkers. I've learned so much from your show and I think you keep that perfect level of optimism but with a very real dose of reality. I appreciate your take.

I really hope they light Hart up like a gross Xmas tree
Call me crazy but I think if they had Forrester and York they win
Your not out of touch

You’re Not out of touch Jason. The people determining whether or not a game is good specifically by the ice time of 39 are out of touch.
Having the 4th line out there at the end of the Avs game down a goal is certainly a strategy……
Jalen Hurts is the worst QB to ever win a Super bowl.

Not out of touch at all….. let’s not act like Philadelphia doesn’t have over dramatic fans…. Screaming to fire the coach 3 games in….
Will be at the game tonight. Let's go flyers!!

Kucherov played those minutes on a team that was in Stanley cup and lost in conference finals at 20-21 little bit different circumstances lol
16:52 Im a fan of the team too. New Flyers fan here, was a TO guy lol but fell in love with the Flyers and their background.
Mike Jordan started the player fandom. Its been like that for decades. It hasnt changed. The emailer is absolutely right about MM

If we play Vladar against Colorado, do you think we win? Let's go flyers!
Michkov complainers are low IQ. There a lot worse problems with this rebuild/team than 39
