Samuel Montembeault Gets 1st Start Since ’20-’21 – Defense Doesn’t Do Him Any Favors – 12-18-25

That was likely David Reinbacher’s worst game of the season but he wasn’t alone as the defense had a few turnovers which didn’t make Montembeault’s night any easier as he gave up 4 goals on 24 shots. Laval is missing Roy, Dauphin, Belzile to suspension and won’t have them next game on Saturday either so that does make things even tougher on the team. Tyler Thorpe scored his 1st career goal.

Mesar Nice Pass/Farrell Chance 0:41
Kidney Assist 1:10
Reinbacher Turnover 3:42
Xhekaj Throws Punches 4:13
Monty Big Save 5:11
Blais Goal Disallowed 5:23
Reinbacher Almost Pulls It Off 6:28
Thorpe Goal 6:55

  1. Can't spell Montenbault without mediocre. 4 GA on 24 shots is horrible. Can't wait for this nightmare to be over!

  2. On the first goal, Monty overcommitted, and went down to early. Second goal,… He gives up the blocker side on a 2 on 1 and the trailer's to his right? God that was pitiful.. Third goal. Monty again, goes down way too soon, completely going for the fake shot and ending up having to retrieve his jock strap from the fifth row as a result… 4th goal was a lucky bounce. So,.. Otherwise, Monty's an all star as he did stop every other shot… 😑 Oh and umm… Nice goal by Thorpe.

  3. its a tough position. also why did the commentator say “getting physically assaulted by xhekaj“ lmao

  4. I think this is it. I didn't see Olympic goaltender, never mind 4 nations. He had always had too many holes in his game. This is where it's all fallen apart. Even as the team improved, he never exceeded 90% for a sv%, gaa went down, but always inconsistent. I can't see him coming back. Good guy, I wish him a happy retirement, he made it farther than he should have

  5. I gotta say Monty's been kind of cursed with unlucky deflections this year. Hasn't helped his case one bit. Also, from point blank yall gotta realise that the goalie can only place the blocker in a predictive way, there is no time to react. The odds of stopping a good shot at this distance on a breakeaway is less than 50/50. Not Monty's absolute A game, but he got left out to dry by the piss poor defensive effort by the offense of the Rocket and got unlucky on that deflection. Laval's offense don't care about backchecking because they already know they'll make the playoffs and the habs bottom 6 is stacked af.

I would say that overcomitment to his reads is his main issue, with the new generation of hockey sticks and the talent these days you have to simplify your game and adapt to a new style of goaltending. It sucks for Monty, but he needs to simplify his game and stop overcomitting to try to make up for the poor start he got this year. He is 100% a very good goalie and has literally proved it last season. He had a difficult start mentally (started this summer) following his groin injury and he honestly got very unlucky with deflections early this season (affected his confidence).

If he simplifies his game and plays good process based hockey without overcomitting too much on his reads, he will 100% be picked up by another club or even go back up this very season and get a brand new NHL start.

He doesn't even have to be a starter, he is 100% talented enough to be a very good and reliable backup.

As soon as he regains trust in his groin, he will be able to reposition much faster after slides and will stop thinking that he has to commit so hard to play good hockey.

Just gotta get over the mental hump and stick with physio. Go Monty most of us still believe in you, we know you are capable. Think positive and you'll get there.

Disclaimer: I don't know shit about goaltending, this is just my basic ass opinion.
