Matthews is the passenger.
The problem was never Marner, the problem was Matthews, who is not a leader and disappears very easily. I think they would have looked like a top team with Tavares as captain and Marner remaining on the team and trading Matthews away instead.
Really don’t think we’ll make the playoffs this year, just not good enough. Miss Marner so much on the power play.
Trade everyone and retool. Send the losers, underperformers, and undersized packing.
They just cant keep their compete together.. like bunch of gold star kids, scared and lost. It's not the coach, the system… its the "team" culture…. gold star kids born far away from grit and grind. JT and Knies seems to be trying, Nylander is a natural super player (but he isn't a foundation player.. like a Crosby, Mckinnon,Mcdavid. ) he's a opportunistic shark that can hammer down some crazy ass shit that maybe the top %1 can pull off. There has to be an anchor, an enrage pillar of the team. Not sure Mathews is it,sure doesn't look like it. About as emotional as a turtle… and most days recently looks like he should just go hide in his shell again. At that position and at this level you have to deliver day in and day out…. or go be 3rd liner…. get surgery, get a sports shrink, or walk away and just be a half ass winger. Dont try to be something your not, never works out.
The window of opportunity closed at game 7 against Florida last spring. Marner knew it.

Mathews Cap hit is 13.250 Million , has 14 goals , 9 assists for 23 points; Sidney Crosby has a Cap hit of 8.7 Million has 19 goals, 16 assists for 35 points. Mathews does not feel guilty receiving his pay check and not guilty about losing gets his money regardless Teas should sign players with a lower amount and the rest should be earned on performance. No play No Pay

I don't know what to think about this group. The team is missing two of its top four defencemen to injury, its top goaltender, and other key players were out early in the season when they lost a bunch of games. Now they basically need to win 2 out of 3 for the rest of the season to make it to the playoffs. Some games they look connected and hard to play against. Others, they look disinterested and lack execution. Our best player's metrics are down in all areas, and 88 has gone ice cold after a pretty hot start. They had a pretty good run of games up until the last few. Wouldn't want to be in Treliving's position right now, especially when he has basically built a team to match Berube's style. I still think the big mistakes were made early on with this core when it was clear their top players didn't have the right mix of skill and grit in the playoffs that cup winning teams possess. But here we are. Definitely feels like a crossroads.

Can't understand a Leafs team Franchise Record for points one year and the next year the players FORWARDS are playing like they all took downers not smelling salts. Total stinker. We have good players but the millionaires except for a few are I do not know not in the right head space.

Get Wendel Clark and Doug Gilmour on the team and in the dressing room as special coaches. Instead of the alumni throw in Darcy Tucker too. Hire them, If anything keep them 3 in the dressing room to stare down the players. Heck they can just sit in chairs and stare down the team, b4 the game and between periods. Just that presence in the room should do something and no more video games, these are grown men playing with toys, come on.
Too many games have the same post game comments ….and there are too many issues to list. When do the players that make the most money earn it consistently? If our PK and PP is so bad, time for new Assistant coaches???

Before the game every player should be pumped and have a KILLER attitude pumped and ready to play, I do not see this on tv when I watch the game.
All 3 goalies are GOOD. It is Not the fault of THEM.
Im so happy matthews decided to step it up this year as captain. Being the driving force when not everyone has it. Blows my mind that hes the captain of the US, thats beyond hysterical.
This season, Leafs having a PP is just letting the other team have a great opportunity to score. I don't know how to fix this team but it needs an intervention. Ever since the loss to the Panthers last spring, they've lost something important. The mojo isn't there. No desire. Really difficult to watch.
