He's exactly right , us oiler fans that went through the ken holland gamble trades/pickups dont want a gamble , we want a guaranteed good goalie , that's why people dont like this trade
Skinner is half price this year, more expensive the next two.
Yeah but that argument is so silly. What teams, honestly, with the 5 or 6 who have that number one goalie making 7-8 million are going to trade their guy? And what does Edmonton really have to offer that won’t deplete their roster?
They couldn't move forward with Skinner. The team lost all confidence in him and something had to change. Kulak and Skinner are RFAs next season and there was no way Edmonton was signing those two with big raises. I think this was a wise move.
There are no guarantees, you can trade for a bigger name like Demko/Soros etc and it not work out due to injury and/or goalie doesn't play well. Jarry is a good option in that he's not on a longer-term contract, his cap hit is relatively low compared to other number 1s, he's a mature nhler but not old by goalie standards, his strengths are things missing from Skinners game and he lives and is familiar with the Edmonton area.
None of the above garuntees things will go well but at least the oilers are trying something different as opposed to riding with Skinner/Pickard for another playoff run.
All this fear of being "locked in " with Jarry is due to the fake deadline narrative created by media and fans, that the oilers must win a cup in the next 2 seasons or mcdavid leaves. Maybe he will leave, but there is no magic formula of trades/roster moves that will guarantee the oilers win the cup in the next 2 seasons.
But when have the oilers ever brought in that big number 1? Remember they dont do that. Ever.
You guys are missing the point. Bowman didnt handcuff the oilers. Mcdavid and his crybaby bullshit this summer did. Cant address goaltending when you are dealing with that.
