Chelios got booed going back to Chicago

Chris Chelios opens up about the moment he returned to Chicago wearing a Red Wings jersey — and got relentlessly booed by the fans who once adored him. A raw, honest look at how brutal hockey rivalries can be, even for franchise legends.

  1. The morons retired his number. What a joke. Another number 7 won 3 cups for the hawks. Side note, his chili was awful

  2. The worse booing was in 2011 I think it was, they thought bc they'd won the Cup all would be forgiven so they honored Chelios during a game pre-game. To protect him from the boos – they hoped – they had him go out there w his whole family, his school age kids, his elderly mother, and they had beloved Hawks guys like Roenick out there w him introducing him. And he goes out there and the fans just boo him into oblivion. His kids look traumatized.

I think part of the number retirement Rocky (RIP) was so set on was to make up for that night. But it still took 13 years, another 2 Cups, and Detroit moving into a different conference for a decade ending the rivalry, till they tried anything like that w him again.

  3. You know how Red Sox fans will chant Yankees suck even when the Red Sox aren't playing the Yankees? Bruins fans did the same thing with Chelios

  4. I love that Chicago fans booed him, like it wasn't the organization's choice not to pay him what he was worth lol

  5. Hated him as a Blues fan but absolutely love him as an on air personality. Plus, ya just gotta respect a guy who played until he was 47 through three different eras of hockey.

  6. If Blackhawk’s fans were intelligent, they would have respected the fact that Chris was a Chicago native. They would have noticed that a hard working (mere) 185 pounder was as tough as many twice his size. They would appreciate his statistics and accomplishments. Fans should have recognized that this over-achieving University of Wisconsin hockey superstar was back home and welcomed him (and his family). It makes me sick the way he was treated at the United Center. The old Chicago Stadium fans (knowledgeable Chicago fans) would have welcomed him with open arms. I hope Chicago makes this right- he deserves better!

  7. Loved him in Montreal. His first stop in the NHL. But i am glad Cheli bounced around to different organizations so the fans can appreciate how good he was for their team. He never ceased to amaze. Also nobody boo’s the nobodies.
Hall of Famer. I heard a great story about Chelios picking up Ted Lindsay for a road trip. Find the story and read/watch it; it’s a good one!

  8. As someone who’s been around him while he was playing, he’s a pos. Same for Shanahan too. Do your research, these two guys are pieces of s. However, Yzerman, Fedorov, Osgood and the rest of the team are good people.
