🚨 Trade alert for the Canadiens? According to insider Pierre LeBrun, if the Nashville Predators decide to move Ryan O’Reilly — the asking price would be steep: a first-round pick plus a top “A-level” prospect.

That puts GM Kent Hughes in a tough spot. On one hand, O’Reilly checks all the boxes: veteran leadership, face-off ability, defensive reliability — exactly what the Canadiens need down the middle.

On the other hand: can the Canadiens afford to give up valuable future assets for a 34-year-old winger? Is it worth risking youth and long-term upside for a “win-now” move?

In this video, Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico break down:

✅ What O’Reilly offers Montreal — and why he makes sense on paper.

❓ What the cost might do to the Canadiens’ long-term plans.

📊 Whether this trade would match Kent Hughes’ philosophy or risk derailing the rebuild.

🧠 What WE think Montreal should do.

  1. Is O’Reilly really much of an upgrade over Kapanen right now?

I can see KH looking for a top-6 forward elsewhere that could slot into Bolduc’s current spot. I believe it’s more likely to find an upgrade to Bolduc than there is to Kapanen.

  2. I would love to see the Habs go after someone like Brayden Schenn. Great at the dot , 2 way player with an upside

  3. Happy Friday Guys! Go Habs! Loving the shows you 2 put on each day. The anticipation to see what Kent Hughes does for our Habs is quite Exciting! It's great to get both your thoughts. Thanks for all the hard work!

I was just in Montreal for the home opener Oct 14th against Seattle. I drove from Prince Edward Island! That was a great game! Cheers guys 🍻

  4. No. 34 years old. If he’s available at the trade deadline and the Habs are buyers, then sure, for a draft pick. Nothing more.

  5. Nashville will get a 1st. The question is the A level like Marco explained. No way. Go get Schenn who will be cheaper imo.

  6. The number one thing that should happen in Nashville is the firing of Trotz. Never was qualified for that job. You don't keep the arsonist to quench the fire and rebuild the house.

  7. Toronto traded a 1st(late round), 2nd, 3rd, gaudette (b prospect) and Abramov(c prospect) for ROR as a rental 2 years ago… Teams won't give A prospects or 1st that are not top 10-15 protected.

  8. There are no other 2nd line centers available. We need to send a 1st and package a player, I say, do it! O'Reilly is a beast and good for the next 2 to 3 years.
If Nick Suzuki gets injured, this team is done.

  9. No…this is a mercenary….and mercenaries have no loyalty to the cause….plus at 35 as with all 35 year olds….this is a declining asset.
    No Kenny no.

  10. Way too much for an old player whose best days are behind him! A year or 2 and the guy is then 36! Giving up an “ A” prospect plus a 1st is stupidity! We’ve got the assets to make a blockbuster for a long term 2C who’s younger and fits our timeline! Aka guys like Byfield, Thompson, and Mctavish! Then and only then would I pay that price!

  11. I’d give Mesar and a 2nd for him. Same for Stamkos but with 50% retention. For Kadri , conditional first and Dach. Dach may be worked into the Nashville deals too.

  12. O’Reilly’s not it. We’ll figure that much. However, I wonder about a guy like Elias Pettersson; a skilled , 2-way left shot center who IS age appropriate. Big contract? Yes. Consistency issues? Sure. Vancouver seems to go towards the selling option, so…Now that Matheson is signed too, it makes Ghule a bit more dispensabe. Worth the while? 🤔

  13. Marco, COL doesn't have a 1rst, 2nd, 3rd or 6th this upcoming draft and no 3rd 2027. They are not considered a top farm team. Sure they could kick the the can down the road due to elite talent, but they are close to crossing that bridge of not enough assets to keep the wheeels greased.

  14. And Marco, 100% agree regarding patience for the Habs on the trade market. They have assets, they will have tons of cap flexibilty, They may strike very hard when they do.

  15. O'Reilly has no value to the habs unless its a second and maybe davidson. He doesnt make us a cup contender this year so why give up prospects and picks . he cant skate well enough to fit in the top six so hes a third line center and at 34 no thanks

  16. Year 4 of a 5 year rebuild and we are talking O'Reilly? Cmon….Kappy is doing ok, let things play out to Xmas. Knee jerk trades for young assets is not HuGo thinking. Trust management and trust the process… keep calm and "Carey On".

  17. Oreilly is not the answer save your assets, first and second rounds picks, A lvl prospects for a big splash, kinda like what Hughes did with Dobson.

  18. The difference between good and great is often only confidence in the NHL. I certainly don’t want a player that openly says he’s only ever had one good season. No thanks to Ryan OReilly he’s not helping Nashville and I don’t think he’d help the Habs.

  19. O'Reilly for a fair price (not what's been the reported asking price. Max a 1st and Roy) would be a great pickup. But O'Reilly is going to end up in Florida, I'm calling it. Trocheck or McCleod make way more sense. Or Thompson if you don't mind the price, but that would be hefty.

  20. We aren’t close enough yet to be mortgaging the future-especially for a 34 year old who we would have for a season and a half. The ‘ask’ is indeed outrageous. It’s called “opening extreme”!

  21. They don’t need a used bandaid , they need a permanent solution, a thing is sure they’ll have to aquire center(s) through trades cause they have nothing in the system , O’Reilly is slower than gallgher , let another team take the hit. Montreal have to many defensemen , too many wingers when everyone comeback healthy and they could even trade a goalie prospect , but they’ll need to aquire centers as they have no depth at all at that position , but agin not for a rental

  22. O'reilly has been in the NHL for 16 years…How much longer will he be in the NHL? …maybe a first round draft choice or a prospect, but not both…
