Lolcow (n) – A person or group of people laughed at for actions that they take, despite not trying to be funny. They may try to take themselves seriously, but they are often “milked” for laughs with or without their knowledge.

In the world of hockey, there is no team that perfectly epitomizes frustration and futility like the Calgary Flames. A team that boasts a great squad on paper, but is never able to translate it to a successful on-ice performance. However, if you look past this hair-pulling façade, you will see something more sinister with this organization. Look into the situation of strong-arming and passive-aggressiveness a city into investing in a state-of-the-art arena… when the arena they play in doesn’t need to be replaced. Hopefully this video teaches you… something.

  1. The Oak View Group privately funded and built UBS Arena on Long Island for the Islanders and Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle for the Kraken. The Oak View Group needs to come to the rescue for Calgary because they still desperately need a new arena. The Saddledome is almost 40 years old.

Update: Ground has finally been broken on a new arena for the Flames. It is expected to be ready in 2027. Three years to go in the dump of the Saddledome.

  2. May 2022: Congratulations, Flames fans. You survived OT in Game 7 against the Stars. You now get to take on your older siblings from Northern Alberta. A match-up 30 years in the making. Make us proud.

You win a wild Game 1 that saw a new record in goals scored during a Battle of Alberta playoff game. A record that stood the test of time for almost 40 years. Momentum is now on your side. All you have to do is take it.

They give up 4 straight to lose the series in 5 games. A pair of 2-0 leads blown and you insist on claiming that you were robbed by a goal being taken off the board? At least you scored a goal from behind your own blue line. With the other team's goalie in the net. That is about your only highlight from this series. Better luck next year.

Calgary makes a big splash by trading Matthew Tkachuk for Jonathon Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar. They pick up Nazem Kadri to replace Johnny Gaudreau, who left to be closer to his family and signs with, Columbus? Odd choice, but okay.

Well, this season has been disastrous compared to last season. Flames currently sit outside the playoffs and the floor is cracking underneath them. 6 points out with only 9 games left on the schedule. Markstrom hasn't been in the same form as he was when he was Vancouver's guy.

  3. I'm a ducks fan and Hiller was trash for the flames in the second round 2015 and Smith was even more terrible in 2017 first round

  4. Now the have nothing, after this and losing to Edmonton in the playoffs, they have become the ultimate definition of the little brother complex. Poor littler brother, hope you don’t relocate since you have no new stadium planed.

  5. Back at this video as the Flames bungle their way out of playoff contention. Gaudreau rightfully bounced out of this mess

  6. Update they finally got their brand new stadium after reaching agreement with the province itself so they’re basically getting bailed out by Edmonton for them to get their new stadium so the entire province will be forced to pay for the new stadium and the stadium will cost more than the next Calgary is expected to be around 2.9billion Hopefully this does not turn out to be a disaster, and it destroys an entire city and an entire sports team and sets the economy in Alberta back by decades

  7. In the 5 seasons since then:
    – Lost in the first round to the Avs when they were the heavy favourites
    – Bill Peters turned out to be a massive racist
    – Lost in the bubble
    – Hired Darryl Sutter back off the farm
    – Missed the playoffs in the Canadian division
    – Had ownership walk away from the arena deal over a $15 million cost overrun
    – Finally won a playoff series only to fail spectacularly against the Oilers when Markstrom turned into pumpkin
    – Missed the playoffs as one of the unluckiest teams ever
    – Turns out the players hate Sutter so he’s gone too
    – Got an arena deal with $300 million in provincial money and $537 million from the city in an election ploy

  8. And then Tkachuk made the Finals only for the goddamn Golden Knights to win it all, more than what the Flames did in 3 decades (35 years without winning, damn)

Edit: And now the Panthers and Tkachuk won a Cup and the Flames will build their arena, crazy, huh

  9. I want the whiny Flames fans in the audience to know one thing: despite the puck crossing the line being disproven, y’all can’t complain. You didn’t show up in overtime or in the second overtime. You didn’t show up in game seven. You blew it. So sit down, shut up, and enjoy being a victim.

  10. If it makes you feel any better, Calgary, we've won two more Cups since that one. Oh? What's that? That doesn't make you feel better? Oh well, see ya next time!

  11. That’s what u get when u get sewered w bad gms the entire 2000’s until now, Conroy is different

  12. Good news: Nenshi didn’t bend over and give the Flames a new arena

Bad news: The next mayor immediately did… and the next premier….
