These Jets Can’t Get off the Tarmac Right Now

Winnipeg has been a very good regular season team for a half decade, but this season is proving to be a major challenge.

  1. Thanks Shannon for putting the info out there like you did. Nothing further to add but yeah we do need a 2nd line centre. Also Lowry is not 100%, he's very stiff out on the ice when turning corners etc… Almost wondering if he came back too soon… anyway, onward and upward, hoping the boys can turn it around over December.

  2. The Jets won the President Trophy last year based on their defensive play. They were fast, they could forecheck, they could take away your space, they had the best defensive system in the NHL. The current roster can't execute that system. Dump ins lead to easy exits for the opposition, they have one good skating defensemen in the lineup, three lines that can't score and try to tread water hoping the top line can outscore the other team. They have been the worst team in two thirds of their games. Too many regulation losses. I'm a Jets fan but they will be a lottery team this year.

  3. They lost 3 fast players.
They replaced those players with aging old slow veterans.

  4. Thanks for transcribing and analyzing the Jets black boxes. This has been an alarming nosedive and crash landing the past few weeks…

  5. I was counting on at least one of our prospects coming up and helping with the scoring depth, but right now Winnipeg seems to be one of the worst teams at developing prospects to become regular NHLers. Surely ONE of Lambert, Chibrikov, Barlow, Yager, Heinola, or Salomonsson should be able to help this team out, right????

  6. I feel like Perfetti has actually been playing better than his stats indicate, he seems to be making all the right plays, just cant seem to finish them. And playing with slow ass bottom 6 level players on the 2nd line is not helping him.

But at least Stanley has actually looked good for the first time in his career

  7. The Wild have gone 11-1-2 since their players-only meeting.

Not a good sign when a team is pulling this lever this early in the season, but it could help the Jets recover.

  8. Jets have three 36yr olds. Schenn can no longer play 2 consecutive games. Nyquist should be waived and Toews who has not played the last couple of years should join Schenn in the press box every other game until he gets his game legs back IF they ever come back.

  9. Jets are in the same amount of trouble as EDM, TOR & FLA and 2 of those teams probably don’t care what their record currently is as they know the season is long.

  10. Okay, but every hockey fan can agree that the Team Meeting coming right after a bad loss to the Sabres is actually comedic gold

  11. Every time you wear that jersey I price it before remembering I really don't root for the Jets in the first place.

  12. The issue is that they weren't as good as their record last year, so some regression was to be expected this year. Add in players getting older and injuries and you have the recipe for a very disappointing year relative to last year's results.

  13. I just cant comprehend how chevy thought pearson, toews and nyquist could some how replace appleton and ehlers. Those 3 guys are too slow to be filling in for 2 of the fastest guys that were on the team.

  14. I wish they would bite the bullet and just play these young guys, clearly playing with "experienced vets" has only caused more harm so might as well start playing the future of this organization now before the core gets too old.

  15. Losing your starting goalie can really make you fall off the face of a cliff, unless your Vegas.

  16. If this current slump doesn't validate the justification of the Hart trophy for Hellebuyck last season, then nothing will.

  17. The Jets have forgotten how to defend and make good decisions with the puck. Toews needs to be in the 4c, if not benched. Barron needs to move up, and Chevy needs to DO SOMETHING.
I think the new faces can't (or won't) play the system. They're SLOW as molasses, so they can't dump and chase – they're beaten to the puck most of the time.

the players only meeting is Lowry trying to get control of the room back – I think the players are deferring/looking to Toews, and he's NOT the captain.

  18. Based on their tough upcoming schedule, I'd lay odds they looked at Buffalo as two victories for sure. Without stellar goaltending, every team is basically .500. Buffalo needs to off-load a goalie, maybe a deal with the Peg?

  19. (shaking head) Jets sooooooo need to relocate to Houston in order to finally get over that hump and win The Cup. In order to go "up" they must go "down" to Houston.

  20. It all comes back down to management, better yet the GM. Chevy should’ve been gone after the 2018-2019 playoffs. Your team just came off an incredible run and lost in the WCF, the team is exactly the same minus Stasney, that was the year Chevy should’ve gone all in, but didn’t. Every year after that the team has gotten worse, especially the defence, and it hasn’t improved since. Not to mention Chevy also values his prospects high, but will never play them in the NHL, causing them to lose value, be picked up on waivers, or asked to be traded.

This year doesn’t surprise me one bit, not at all. We lost Ehlers for nothing (granite we weren’t going to sign him to the money, and lots of people didn’t want him back), defence is still garbage (still the same), and we signed veterans who are all on the decline, and a player who hasn’t played in over two years (I personally hated, strong word I know, the Toews signing, because I knew right at that point, that was Chevy one and only big offseason move).

It sucks being a Jets fan at the moment, knowing your team will barely make the playoffs, or miss them entirely (I predicted them finishing 2nd Wildcard, you can’t change my mind) and most likely overpay for a veteran player at the deadline on a expiring contract.

I believe Chevy’s goal, and only goal, is to make sure the Jets make the playoffs, because regardless if they get passed the first round or not he will keep his job because ownership is blind.

We need a change. Start playing rookies more, don’t move them back to the minors because they didn’t score 2 goal in 3 games on the 4th line (get younger), find an actual 2nd line centre (Schenn please even though it most likely won’t happen), and upgrade the BLOODY DEFENCE, help your goaltender.

These are my thoughts. I’m just getting tired of watching the same thing over and over and over again.

  21. Oh yes, there's panic alright!
An astute analysis of the Jets current situation THG!
They are in disarray to put it mildly, watching them plummet in the standings and Power Rankings is painful!
It's crazy how the absence of 2 players has affected them so much!

  22. The Jets right now are basically the 2020s version of the 2010 Canadiens, rely way too much on our superstar goalie and only 1 line that can score. I'm a big Toews fan and I love the homecoming story, but he, Nyquist, and Schenn are 100% has-beens. Perfetti? He's honestly Bryan Little 2.0, he has a good 2-way game, but sluggish skating. Namestnikov? I almost have 0 complaints about him, but he's not a true centerman IMO. Something needs to change for the Jets.

  23. Probably a wake up call to defense. They relied on him so much for the past forever and it's why they never get far. Because Hellebuyck turns into cheese in the playoffs.

  24. Jets finish 1st in the league last year with nemesikov on the 2nd line but this year we throw him on the 4th line…
