Youth & Experience ft. James van Riemsdyk | Morning Cuppa Hockey

James van Riemsdyk joins Morning Cuppa Hockey after the Detroit Red Wings’ 4–2 win over the Seattle Kraken, a night where JVR continued to help drive the Wings’ pace and identity. Dylan Larkin capped things off with his 12th of the season into an empty net, and we’ll dive into how Detroit continues to build momentum in a tight Atlantic Division race.

We also shift to Toronto, where the Maple Leafs pulled out an ugly win against St. Louis. It wasn’t pretty, but a brilliant veteran play from John Tavares ended up being the difference. We’ll break down how that moment flipped the game and what it says about the Leafs’ ongoing search for consistency.

Around the league, the NHL’s young stars took over again. Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini both exploded for hat tricks, reinforcing just how quickly the next generation is reshaping the league. From skill to swagger, last night was another reminder that the future is arriving fast.

But not everything was highlight-reel worthy. Mikko Rantanen drew major attention for a dangerous hit on Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov, sparking questions about supplemental discipline and where the line is in today’s game. We’ll look at the play, the reaction, and what comes next.

Hit like and subscribe for your daily morning reset around the league.

  1. He’s been on late in games with a one goal lead with the goalie pulled so that Sharks fan was incorrect on his 2 goal lead take.

  2. The flashy Tavares argument…. sometimes it's like what are you arguing about again guys? If you listen to each other you're agreeing. Maybe that doesn't make for good podcasting though

  3. JT miller has had bad body language and lack of effort even in his time in Vancouver a team counting on him as a leader will never succeed and he should be nowhere near team USA

  4. I watched Tavares his entire Islander career, probably most games he ever played for them, and "flashy" is not a word I'd use to describe him. For instance, another Islander from around the same time, Michael Grabner–he was flashy. Not as good, but certainly flashy. He was pretty much all flash and not much else. Tavares was a plugger, but with way higher skill than most pluggers. A 500 goal plugger.

Also, the US hockey team can't afford the luxury of politics. If they're picking their team on the basis of politics, they're gonna lose. They're gonna lose anyway, but if they leave better players home to take lesser players because of politics, they have no chance. Everything I hear about Team USA gives me bad feelings for the upcoming Olympics. They won't even be in the gold medal game. They're a balloon inflated with a lot of hot air instead of just treating it as business to accomplish like Team Canada.

  5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR1smK7CbwM I'm only a couple minutes into this, but it's a ton of Tavares absolutely undressing dudes in the most understated way.

Bedard – His shot volume went away last year, and if you're not shooting then you aren't scoring. Celebrini was the goods last year, and he's still the goods this year.
