Is Stuart Skinner As Good As Gone?

Chris Johnston was the first guest on today’s show. He touched on the Oilers trade rumours and share whether or not he thinks the Oilers will make a goaltending trade. He then touched on what team he feels will be the first one to start selling.

  1. I would hope to make several tweaks and call ups first. First play Nurse as a RD, play him with ekholm and try to make a shut down pair. Kulak with Bouchard where both of them figure out how to defend and not get caught deep anymore. Try outs 3rd pairing until Wahlman gets back starting with calling up Prokop if possible. Imo he's the the dude that's always been around it down there and he defends the areas that matter.

  2. I have faith in Skinner. They need better defence. That is the issue. Why trade away two Stanley cup finals worth of experience when your problem is giving away grade a chances from the slot. Aside from putting in a net sized piece of plywood in for a tender absolutely nothing is going to change long term with a trade. A goalie would have to play out of body to help the oil right now and it's not sustainable even for the best of the best.

  3. Skinner has been a very streaky goalie, and as much as I may want to predict that his career with the Oilers is done, I don’t believe that that is the case just yet.

  4. Trust in Skinner? yeah, I also trust that it's gonna be warm tomorrow in Edmonton. Wake up guys! Don't care about stats, Skinner is one of the worst NHL goaltenders. Stats are lying, they are circumstantial. Skinner has 8 out of 10 Goaltending skills-area very weak and unpredictable. Two SC finals? Yeah, the team played way better, not Skinner.

  5. Stu has been run out of town poor fella. Forced into a starting role because of a bone head Campbell signing.

  6. Everyone in Edmonton acts like Skinner DOESNT HAVE THE WORST SAVE % OF ANY GOAL IN THE PLAYOFFS MINIMUM 30 GAMES PLAYED.
    thats no small sample size.

  7. Chris Johnston's comment, about it not yet being time to tear it down and start again, should have Oilers fans crapping in their boots. McDavid's deal, as extremely home town discount and Oilers friendly as it is, is only two years. If there is even the slightest hint of a whiff of Oilers management contemplating some remote possibility of tearing it down and starting again, McDavid is gone. And if McDavid goes, without having brought a Stanley Cup to Edmonton, this would be a stunningly massive fail that would even make the decade of darkness pale in comparison. And all the millennial and gen-Z "Boys on the Bus" detractors could then spend another two decades crying in their beer. Different teams, different eras. But that Oilers dynasty team could play any style against any team in the league and win. You wanted to fight it out in the alleys, the Oilers could do that. You wanted to play run and gun pond hockey, the Oilers could do that. You wanted to play with dazzling skill and finesse, the Oilers could do that in spades. The Oilers could beat every team in the league playing whatever game that team wanted to play. Their multiple playoff runs usually saw them play all three styles at various times, and win all three ways far more often than not. Getting back to today, I'd say Stan Bowman has his work cut out for him. He's made some good moves but we're all wondering whether we have all made a massive misread on Trent Frederic. Is this going to be a version of Bowman's Darnell Nurse albatross. Thank the lord Frederic's not getting 6 or 7 million a year. As it is, Frederic's 3.85 million AAV is starting to look like a massive overpay for a checking winger who doesn't want to check. Gotta hope, for the Oilers' and Bowman's sakes, that Frederic figures it out, sooner rather than later or not at all. I've said it before and I'll say it again, get Paul Coffey back here as defensive coach, now. Whatever Coffey did the last two seasons was magic and the current guy just doesn't have it. Get the defense playing proper defensive hockey and most of the rest will come back of its own accord.
