Alex Ovechkin’s Magical Goal From His Back Named Greatest Goal Of The 21st Century
After a month of voting and 30 different matchups, the fans have decided: Alex Ovechkin’s iconic goal from his back in 2006 has been named Sportsnet’s Greatest Goal of the 21st Century.
Imagine if that had been a playoff winning goal. It'd be up there with Bobby Orr's for all-time greatest with a statue outside of Ovi corralling the puck around his head in front of Capital One Arena. He had another incredible goal in the playoffs years back against the Rangers where he turned 3 defenders inside-out to score on Lundquist. The game was already pretty much won, but again, if it was a more decisive goal then it would have been immortalized. Even though this one is regular season against a weaker team, it will always stick around just because of how unbelievable the outcome was. As well as signalling to anyone that didn't already know, just how exciting Ovechkin was going to be for the league over the next decade (or two).
Ovechkin's goal was sick don't get me wrong but it was Pure Luck he couldn't duplicate that if he wanted to, Pavel Datsyuk should have won this his goals were pure talent and could duplicate them anytime he wanted to
I will forever argue until my death that Nash's goal is by far better than Ovi's. Real top two should have been Nash vs Datsyuk going through the whole Preds team. At least Twitter did something right for once and Nash won on the poll there.
Not to downplay that goal.. was truly epic, BUT… I've seen Datsyuk score more prolific goals. Just one guys opinion is all this is. The fact so many others voted against it also shows that it only reflects the views of.. those who actually voted vs whatever was put up against it.
I knew in 2006 already when I saw this beauty that goal is going to be the greatest goal (not only in 21st century) but maybe forever Really just think what you have to do to beat that goal 🙄
Rick Nash had an amazing goal, but it's also something McDavid does multiple times a year. Ovie's goal, however, will likely never be equalied in either quality or difficulty. He really had to thread that thing.
The fact that he did this while Gretzky was the opposing coach and Mathews was watching the game in the audience to further inspire him was kinda crazy as well

Ridiculous that this won. Iconic? Yes. Greatest? Pahahaha
45% of hockey fans voted against this goal. What is wrong with this world??
That?!?! Just looked like a lucky shot to me but whatever.🤷♀️
I’m from a non English speaking land… i just don’t understand
WHY you say 21? 20….20? Not 21…20?

I don't get you pp, you rather admiring luck than SKILL. WAKE UP!
Funny how both of the top two goals in this competition were against the Coyotes. lol
The issue I have with both the Ovechkin and Nash goals… they both lost the puck, and it luckily found it's way back to them
Forsberg?
Shouldn't it be "So Far"…?
Круто! Не поспоришь!!

Can't call it the greatest of the 21st century until the year 2100 and the start of the 22nd century
в этом месяце уже пробил отметку 800 голов!
This is easily my favourite goal in nhl, it really shows how good ovechkin is and how he can score from any point and from any position

Fyi: just watching the NHL all star and Auston Matthews was in attendance. That's when he said to his dad he wanted to be a hockey player.
I can tell you the exact moment I became an Ovechkin fan for life.
I don’t think there will ever be a better goal than this.
The greatest goal of the 21st century ? Nah try greatest goal of all-time .
This is the most unique goal I’ve ever seen.
Those capitals uniforms were S tier

Arizona Coyotes is the luckiest team to face both best goals against in person 🙂
Waiting to see what 895 will look like …
You never recognize history when it's being made.
