The Leafs haven’t had an elite GM in their prime since Cliff Fletcher 1991-97. Blaming the core 4 is short sighted. The much bigger issue is the GM/FO, defense, depth outside of top4-5 best players, defense, consistent goaltending especially compared to the teams who have made the most final 4s, finals (+ won titles) the last 20yrs!

Yes Leafs looked good the first 2.5 games vs Florida, but objectively on the whole they got murdered the final 4.5 games by the Panthers!

Not a leaf fan, but as an outsider I can comfortably say what the leafs have dished out money wise the last decade to Marner, Matthew’s & Nylander is WILD. They aren’t worth near what they’re payed. Management has no idea how to handle contracts or assets(previous at least) and the Leafs are crippled by it.
Handing of finances/contracts between a Kent Hughes/Gorton vs Shanahan/Dubas is night and day. It’s honestly embarrassing.

What decisions? Matthews, Nylander, Reilly and Tavares will not agree to trades and if you try and make it miserable for them to wanna leave then that looks terrible on the organization and they’ll have no outside players wanting to play for them because of the way they treat players who they give no move clauses. Matthews will play out his contract missing big chunks of the next 2 seasons and move on as a free agent. Nylander will not leave because he’s happy to just get his points and get paid and doesn’t care about winning and Reilly and Tavares won’t waive because of family reasons. It’s gonna be a painful next few years and nothing they can do about it.

Mathews as Captain was the Mistake
I don't want to be a Debbie downer but I can't see much changing. The top players can't lead the charge to the Cup.It's been that way for at least 5
years. They a great regular season team to watch, sell a ton of merch, fill the seats but can't finish. Marner left at the right time. Management will get their bonuses until fans don't show up….but unfortunately that never happens.
Boston traded Thornton cuz they felt that he can't lead them to a cup and they were right. These guys may let Mathewes walk for nothing.
The only deep things this team have are deep pockets.

Finally a podcast that makes sense. Tree has to be fired soon, you can’t let him manage the next trade deadline. The only “significant” assets that can bring back franchise improving talent, maybe not on day one, are Matthews, Nylander and even Knies. Step one is to get their 26 and 27 firsts back from Boston and Philly.
