Pinder & Rhett CLASH Over Mikael Backlund’s Leadership 😤 | FN Barn Burner

Pinder & Rhett get into a heated debate over Flames captain Mikael Backlund — is he really the right guy to be leading this team? 🤔 How does he lead, and what kind of captain is he supposed to be? He’s not a superstar, but he’s been a Flame forever… does that make him the right leader for a team struggling this badly?

Backlund recently signed an extension and was named captain last season, but his play to start the year has been far from inspiring. The guys don’t hold back in this fiery discussion about leadership, expectations, and what the Flames need from their captain right now.

  1. Rhett’s absolutely on point I am really disappointed in backlunds performance give weegar captain and make him a healthy scratch and bring in kerins have him under his wing hand him off the experience teach him a little and let kerins bloom!

  2. Backlund is shite. Just admit it. They should have never signed the extension. Last night he basically let Montreal make a play and score. Jerome cared. He gave a damn. Backlund? I don't see it.

  3. I look at it differently. We been in the middle of the pack for so long thats our identity. The way we have been half ass building teams have hurt us so in so many ways. I'm sorry to say this but we need bad times to create good times kinda thing. Once we hit rock bottom so many good things can happen. For one we will see out of the youth that will step up and we will see who out of the youth who has the set
of balls on them that hates to loose so bad they carry the team on their shoulders. Iggy was a great leader yes he never had the players he really needed to take the team to a top team every year. But what he did was lead by example and with the young players coming up and if we can trade for future stars or draft them in combination of a player that has some serious dog in them this can be a wild team to watch but u guys are %100 where is the players that have all dog and brings it game after game.

  4. backlund is the captain.
    Backlund earned it.
Backlund played in Abbotsford for us
He’s got a calm relaxed leadership but it’s very professional.
    Don’t like the Backlund hate
    Weegar is very emotional.
He’ll get his chance but wouldnt rush it

  5. You guys know Darryl Sutter was right about everything

You should speak about Sutters point of view

    Pelletier (gone)
    No Captain (he was right)
Team acting like children (he was right)

All you guys are saying, Sutter was right

  6. My question is wtf is he supposed to lead?????????????Conroy did nothing but promote and hype all summer and may have ruined the career of what promised to be a great young offensive defenseman.

  7. Backlund has never been Captain material. He's never been a game breaker. I've never seen him doing anything to spark come back or come out in a game and be the guy. Ever!

  8. Backlund's backcheck effort on the Montreal OT goal shows where his head is at, he doesn't care.

  9. Backlund having the C is the epitome of this franchise. Just good enough to get by. They only gave him the C because of longevity, not because he is a leader.

    Our Patrick Marleau.

  10. The problem with the other Oilers themed podcasts is they don't spend enough time talking about how much the flames suck. That's why I like you guys, you give Oilers fans what they really want, a nice 50 / 50 balance of Oilers awesomeness, and flames crapiness.

  11. The fact is it's a pointless discussion, they could strip the C off Backlund and put it on whoever you like that's on the team and the result would still be a below average team missing the playoffs. Also the good captain = playoffs argument is idiotic, for instance Ignila was a Flame for 16 Season's (not counting 95/96) and for that time the team missed the playoffs 11 times and made the playoffs 5 times. Also in those 16 season's the team made it out of the first round exactly once.

  12. still waiting for a NHL or big network to sign Pinder cause he knows everything abour sports just him he will tell how right he is 🤣

  13. If Backlund's "C" came with his extension, as an armchair GM would've let him walk. Sure he captained team Sweden once during that "worlds" – He is a role player caliber type in the NHL.

  14. Sorry but since when is backland responsible for creating the team? This teams structure is not good enough to make
The playoffs, everyone knows that. How is that backlunds fault?

  15. This argument is stupid af. The team hasn’t been built to win and somehow that’s backlunds fault?

  16. I genuinely think this team needs a bit of runway to learn how to play together. Have this conversation halfway through the season. Backs has been playing his ass off. Lots of teams don't make the playoffs.

  17. Backlund should have been traded years ago when he was still one of the better two way players in the league, it would have sped up the rebuild and the Flames could have got some good assets in return.
Now it's too late and it looks he's just coasting around because he knows the Flames will pay him until he retires. I'm sure he's a nice guy and a good teammate but the Flames are too obsessed with loyalty and for what? loyalty and being the nice guy haven't done anything for the Flames for the past 30 years. Other teams don't have any issue with trading long time players that they have drafted if it's better for the team, while the Flames want to hold onto them.
