Living in the GTA, I’ve watched a lot of leafs hockey over the years and is 100% agree with your take on them. I would add that there is a 0% change they trade Marner to a division rival, there’s just too high a risk of getting burned.
Cernak has probably had this conversation
I don’t think Cernak is or should be untouchable but if he leaves he still has enough upside that it has to be for more value than just cap space. I don’t see a clear path to Tampa being a cup favourite next year anyway so give it one more season, get him some help, and make that call next offseason. At that point Tampa will probably have the most flexibility that they will get with this core. Next year’s free agent class also looks a lot better right now so there is a better chance of grabbing a good player who gets squeezed out by the market for cheap. There is also a chance that Isaac Howard or Roman Schmidt are ready for an NHL look then which would also make the cap easier. Next offseason is the time to cut dead weight at any cost and go all in for one last Cup with this group.
Maybe he would be willing to o to Nashville, Pittsburgh or Anaheim with some old friends. JBB said, nothing off the table. Keep Lilliberg and Crozier, Chaffee on 3rd line and maybe DuClaire if possible . And Stamkos!
I don’t think it’s the sergachev and cirelli contracts that are hurting us those 2 are both key pieces of our future in Tampa hockey; along with hagel and pointer, kuch etc. what absolutely killed us is the flat cap during Covid and the fact we won back 2 back those specific years (would never want it any other way) and I truly think we should be compensated for it to be honest. That would be the fair thing to do. The cup winners since us have not been nearly as strapped for cap space as we are. Colorado, Vegas etc.
Such a disastrous and short sighted decision by the league to implement a flat cap over that span.
