The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenseman Chris Wideman to a 2-year contract extension, and we discuss what it means for the Habs’ own timeline for their rebuild. We also discuss two hot topics in the Canadiens fanbase: what would it take to trade for the 2nd overall pick from the New Jersey Devils so that the Habs can get both Shane Wright AND Juraj Slafkovsky? And how difficult will it be to trade Shea Weber’s contract to another NHL team?

A big difference is shea Webber is gonna be on ltr And Patrick Marlowe had to be bought out
Are you sure about the LTIR needing to fit under the cap day 1? Because in the Capfriendly FAQ they say that you can use the LTIR during off-season with the 10% and that the LTIR will be recalculated without the 10% at the start of the season. There is several team that were at the cap AND started the season with LTIR. Tampa Bay traded for Brent Seabrook 6.8M$ in July so before the season started. They clearly didn't have to be 6.8M$ under the cap at day 1 of the season before putting Seabrook on LTIR.
Its not possible to have a 26m cap recapture anymore. The cap recapture has been change some years ago to be limited at the player aav and the exemple use was litterally weber. If the cap recapture will have been over the aav it is limited to the aav and extended for more years until the amount is recaptured
Love these podcasts and the fact that you are not afraid to tackle sensitive issues
How about both? After watching a number of juraj slafkovský highlights, I think we need to take him at number 1. He is Jagr 2.0. But we may still be able to grab wright and here is my pitch. Take slafkovský at number 1, hope the devils will grab nemec at number 2 because they are already deep at center….and make a trade with arizona for their 3rd pick and grab wright. If wright goes at number 2, then grab cooley. This only works if they can swing a deal with arizona but the habs have a lot of nhl ready prospects and draft picks to work with in a deal. If iam arizona, they are assuming slafkovsky and wright are gone…so how much do they want cooley or nemec is part of this equation.
No secret New Jersey Devils Love Cole Caufield 😍, but No Thanks.
True, but we can trade for Ottawa, No.7 pick. Which is not top 5. No to trading Anderson, or Romanov. Maybe Dvorak for Ottawa no.7, or Mailloux who is very good, but Hughes is not rushing at all to sign.
What New Jersey wants for their pick is laughable, only a fool would go for what they want and there are other drafts and the ufa market.
PS guys…. what is the SURVEY LINK….
First off I wanna start by saying I love your show overall (last time I critiqued one thing, yall seemed to think I hated the show and was a hater.
I really don’t. I love it.
It’s just sometimes you wanna reply to a specific part).
Now moving on…
When Scott mentions the Habs would have to include prospects & drafts to move Shea Weber’s contract,
I don’t agree.
I really don’t see why the Habs would feel an urge to do that so much so that they would use their own assets to move the contract.
Weber has a cap hit of 7.8M,
but the Actual SALARY that the team is going to pay him from their pockets will be 3M$ next year,
And then 1M$ per year the next 3years.
From their pockets, it’s really not that bad what is coming off.
Now the cap hit IS higher at 7.85M per year…
BUT !!!
It’s not like he can play but he’s terrible and hurting the team like a Karl Alzner type.
He Is INJURED LONG TERMMMM
what is the problem here?
You put him on LTIR.
Period.
If they’re moving Weber’s contract,
ON THE CONTRARY
I think it’s the COYOTES who would have to give us picks or prospects,
Because THEY are a very poor team
Just trying to reach the salary FLOOR (not cap, yes the FLOOR).
So imagine the advantage for a team like that.
They get 7.85M on their books
(Obviously I hope for them there is no rule FORCING THEM to put Weber on LTIR, cause it would need NOT to be on LTIR to help them).
So 7.85M on their salary cap.
BUT !!! Only costing them 3M in ACTUAL dollars.
The second overall is still technically unproven and so it’s difficult to say what Jersey would ask in return for it, they may want a pick, a prospect and a roster player so it’s not as far fetched as you make it seem.
Habs needed to sign Wideman. Very weak on the right D side. Especially if Petry leaves.
Waiting for a 36 minute video explaining why Potato McPotatoface isn’t a good prospect.
I love caufield but I would move him for Slav ina heartbeat
Thank you for not engaging in some of the nonsense that some fanbase (mainly Vancouver) are, where they seem to think the Devils owe them the 2nd overall pick for the players they want to get rid of.
That late cooley interview tells me they will package a deal with an established player Anderson, weber’s contract, a young guns (farell) and calgary’s pick
Laura, I really like your take on Wideman, the two year contract makes a lot of sense now. Had he been a more talented d-man, I would have had a problem to the extent that it might hurt our draft lottery odds for 2023. I see this as a silent tank sort of move and that's why I like it. Likewise, if he helps to keep Guhle in the AHL instead of the NHL this year, I will be pleased as well.
At 2nd overall, I am taking the right handed d man! Jiricek, not the next Jesse Puljuarvi (spelling?). Whatever Jersey wants from our vet. pool, goalies, D, or forwards, I will pay gladly!
For 2nd overall we give petry, Allen, or 2nd first round pick. They get 2 big needs a good goalie and defense.
Scott, without looking at Jersey's roster or cap situation, or knowing exactly what "immediate help" means, how might Gallagher, Petry, and Anderson for the second overall sound?
a player worth TRADING UP for Korchinski… projected to go 12th…..
A few thoughts…. First on cap space, the most important thing to manage. You cant have Weber and Price on LTIR. Its ok if you don’t get a good return… remember the Theodore trade back then? What you get is room to manage the roster and that is a gigantic plus! Thats is value in itself. You can then accept a bad contract as part of a trade… need that flexibility, even tough there is a cost to it. Devils pick is also interesting as Slavvy (easier to say 😉). He is NHL ready and that increases the value of the pick. Habs have to evaluate their active and future roster and be ready to pay a hefty price that does not include #15, #21, #22. There is plenty of options after that as Gorton and Hugues did not select most of players on roster. Realistic options, any combination of Anderson, Romanov, picks in 22 and 23 (2nd), Luke Tuch, S. Farrell, Primeau, other potential prospects…. Now if the combos don’t work, surely trying to land a 2nd top ten pick could be in the cards…. Time will tell. I trust that G&H will put their mark on this team in the next month or so! But they need to know whats going to happen with #6 & #31. Have a fantastic day!
love the content and continue the good work.
Scott, it's pronounced "sick-a-moose"
I'm not so sure we'd have to pay that much to get rid of Weber's contract.
Arizona traded Vitale + 20th overall + 53rd to Detroit vs 16th overall + Datsyuk's contract. Looking at draft pick value, paying a 2nd (around the 55th) to get from 20th to 16th is proper value. We could argue that Datsyuk was traded straight up for Vitale who had no value; he was most likely included to keep the contract ratio even.
Arizona also traded Sam Gagner + 3rd + 4th to Phily vs Grossman + Pronger's contract. We can again argue that Gagner was traded for Grossman and one of the 2 picks and Arizone gave out a pick for Pronger.
I can see a world where Arizona's owner wish to save $$ is bigger than the help they are giving the Habs. We're talking of a 31.4m on the cap for the next 4 with a real cost of 6m. I could see that owner (who was kicked out of their previous arena for not paying on time and who's moving to a college rink) willing to pay up so he can keep an extra 25m in his pocket over the next 4 years.
If the Habs do end up having to pay to get rid of the contract, i expect something minor like a mid round pick or maybe moving down from the 26th spot to the 30th.
I could be wrong but, looking at Arizona's past history + their current situation, I wouldn't be willing to give much more than that as this helps them as much if not more than it helps us.
Getting 1 and 2 would be the way to go to reduce the risks of yet another Canadiens draft flop. Once in a lifetime opportunity.
To get number 2, Canadiens probably need to give our 26th, 33rd and number one 2023.
High price but a great deal win-win style for both new jersey and Canadiens !
Actually, I don't have a lot of faith in Flash Gorton. Don't forget he gave mcdonagh and JT Miller to Tampa.
One of the worst trades in last 10 years.
Peoples think trading work like in EA NHL
The thing that u not understand NJ as zero leverage in that trade! Why?Because if we draft Slafkovsky, neither Wright or Cooley is valuable for them, secondo the habs have other option!Trading with the Jets for Dubois,Trading with the Coyotes for Cooley or Wright, signing Kadri at free agency,or just waiting to the 2023 draft for a better center!
