The Leafs are much better when play physical. Haven’t really watched much this season but Dakota checks well, so does Roy. The defence needs to physically remove the opposition from the front of the net. Just having Robertson in the top line shows the lack of depth in this abysmal version of a hockey team.
The Leafs and their defensive issues were masked by great goaltending last year, now their goaltending has come down to earth and couple that with the fact that they lost a player who puts up 90 plus points (including 102 last season) in his sleep they were bound to struggle, Marner was also a great defensive forward for them has well. I'm not saying they will miss the playoffs for sure this season but I certainly would not be surprised if they did.
You are exactly right. They started the Matthews era on a positive note, but became impatient and traded away too many young players. I am at a loss and at this point it is mental as much as it is conditioning. They look old and slow. Injuries are the x-factor with no trade bait and no cap room again!
tbh, never seen easton cowan overrated online, by fans or media alike.
Delete Marner from the lineup and a new defense coach and it might take a little bit of time to get it together. Kniews might be on Marners scoring pace, but he isn't anywhere close to Marner's defensive contribution. Its not the points, its the damn defensive play under pressure and its not like we haven't seen this before. Making adjustments while delivering a very mediocre first quarter of the season is not a reason to panic.
SO I guess Marner wasn't the problem eh.
Preventing goals and the 3rd period play are killing them. When one of their players gets run over or takes a dirty hit and that player who did the thing gets clobbered by all the Leafs still standing on the ice, you'll know the Leafs have arrived.
Worse thing they did was getting rid of Marner. He will never be replaced. Now they are a JOKE.
Been saying this since the hire was made. The problem is Lalonde. He coaches guys and they look fucking lost out there. It's not a coincidence that he came to Toronto and suddenly their defense looks worse. The Wings had the EXACT same problems defensively last season before he was fired.

I've said this before but when do the leafs stop naming scapegoats. Its constant. Marner, Keefe, Babcock, Kessel, Murphy, Anderson, Shanahan and on and on and on. When does it become the team as whole and as an organization cannot get it done needs to be completely re-done. A new culture from the bottom up

The second both Tanev and Matthew’s went down, that’s when things ‘really went south’.
Their now 8-9-2 record is actually better than they have deserved so far. The cupboards are completely empty, no trade assets, lacking depth MAJORLY throughout the lineup. Ya, Toronto is screwed.
They need to re-acquire their first round picks from Boston and Philly.
This season is a bust.

As a wings fan, the hiring of Lalonde to run the defense was mind blowing. Did you see his Red Wings? Historically bad PK and defense. Now under Mclellan they're top 10 with the same personell. And now the Leafs are getting caved in their end. I think there could be a common cause
..what the Leafs did last year matters not…they are unable to compete with heavy teams and need to take a look at a rebuild..
