1st period was our best. Lots of grade A chances. The rest of the way, Utah took over and we started that maddening habit of overpassing the puck (especially on the PP). And then in OT, we once again, looked as if we've never played at 3 on 3. Both goalies made many highlight reel saves. Face-offs continue to be a glaring weakness. With all that said, we managed to get a big point. Go Sabre's!
I don't know why they were booing Peterka. Clearly, Ruff had a big influence on trading him out.
Given the Sabres players out of the lineup, I'm happy with a point in the game. Utah is one of the top teams in the league early on. Eastern Conference is crazy close. 5-1-4 in their last ten games since the 0-3 start. Looks a heck of a lot better than if it were to be 5-5. These OT losses are getting annoying, but points are points.
With all the Levi talk the biggest talking point should be how Lyon is playing himself into the 1A goalie spot. If Lyon keeps it up the conversation has to be which of the 2 younger goalies Buffalo keeps beyond his season (Levi has to play in 29 games this season to lose his waiver claim exemption)- Ellis or Levi. Buffalo can wait closer to the trade deadline to move UPL if Lyon continues his great play in net. Having UPL around till then might benefit Buffalo if Lyon's play declines & UPL gets hot.
Power looked lost. Thompson hit post twice.
Alex tuck can't hit the ocean from a boat. He missed a wide open net in o.t.
Can't make playoffs with 1 point per game.
I was there to say Peterka got Booed is an understatement. He got it all night haha
My biggest takeaway from this game is that Lyon is showing that he has earned the #1 goalie job and that Adams should be actively shopping UPL for the best return he can get.
He’s 10th in the league in SV% and has a 2.81 GAA. UPL only has 1 season out of the last 4 where his SV% was above .900 and a GAA under 3.00.
If weee going to have a 3 goalie rotation, Levi deserves to be in that mix to find out if his time in Rochester has prepared him for the NHL. This is the ONLY way to know by the Trade Deadline which of the 3 Goalies (Lyon, Levi or Ellis) need to be moved to improve the team.
Power continues to play small. Must drive Ruff bonkers. Kesselring, in 4 games has more hits than Power had all last season. Power, along with a goalie, should be on the block imo.
We didn't get ''lucky'' at all, lyon played outta his mind, pk is ELITE, vejmelka was a wall, we were missing OVER HALF of our forward starters against an actual good team. We EARNED that point with heart and grit.
Lyon Played his A$$ Off. The Team Skated Really Well. Cant Score on Break aways to Save our life. Players who are our Goal Scoring Boys are not Getting it Done when Needed. On the Bright side,We have a lot of players Out,so it’s Encouraging to see the youth playing well though. Peterka was Boood
It was a good team game (considering the roster for the game against Utah) backed by incredible goalie play, again it just seems our overtime play has been lacking and they collapse, how many times are we gonna let the star player/players just walk in all alone on our goalie(happened in toronto too w/ Tavares), if you go back and watch just the ot goals, it all starts with someone makes a bad defensive move and then it's either a huge odd man rush or a breakaway, we need to work on 3v3 ot in practices so things like this don't happen, too many overtime losses in a short amount of time where we make a huge mistake trying to be too aggressive and then it just goes the other way to leave our goalie in a bad spot to make a save, we can't settle for ties every game, yes it is better than losing, but getting 82 points in tie loses all season is not going to make our playoff drought end any sooner.
completely outplayed in the 2nd and 3rd period Sabres generated some quality chances but they were running around all game Utah possessed the puck it felt like the whole game
The core problem with the Sabres is they are missing a core scoring forward like JJ. Not specifically JJ but someone like him that is a proven 30+ goal scorer. Now you may have that with Kulich, Doan and Quinn. However none of these players have that proven level of scoring. We have a lot of depth scoring. However not really good primary scoring outside of Tage. And NO. Noris does not count because he is always injured. To prove my point we do not have a single player in the top 5 goal scorers.
Now part of that again is young players like I said, some of that is injury related however while I am not going to bash the JJ trade because it has worked out for both teams. The weakness of that trade is we didn't replace the goal scoring production. We need to find a scoring forward like a Owen Tippett who can consistently put the puck in the net.
With that said we could get closer to being in the Playoffs this year because we are getting points out of tighter scoring games. With that said even if we got into the playoffs we will be very limited because no team has won the cup that did not have a good level of scoring. Even tighter checking teams won who had a few guys on the team that could consistently put the puck in the back of the net.
Again Kulich, Doan, Quinn, Benson, Rosen and others CAN become this however they are not there year and you cannot count on these players because outside of Quinn. Most are very early in their NHL careers. So yea we need at least 1 experienced scoring winger like Tippett. Noris could have been this for the Sabres however you cannot count on him at all. Sorry but you cant anyone that thinks they can is a fool. And yes that Cousin's trade was stupid because just look at Noris. I would rather have traded Cousin's for a Prospect that is nearly ready for the NHL that had been scoring a ton in the AHL and a pick than Noris.
The game was very one sided. We had some good looks but no one could put it in. Kesselring had the best opportunity but overall the Sabres just couldn't keep up with the speed of the Mammoth. We have a new unintentional "kid line" but the big guns of the Sabres fell silent once again. Lyon was the only reason we got a point out of this.
We got very lucky to get a point.. Lyon was awesome. Team needs to get healthy. Half the lineup is from Rochester. Currently playing without Benson, Norris, Kulich, Zucker, Kozak, and Danforth. 6 out of 12 forwards out is alarming.
I had seats close to the glass. It was a much tighter game than the stats show. We had a lot of scoring chances that we didn’t bury. Way too many cute passes instead of just shooting the puck. Really annoying and Lindy needs to drill this out of them. The goal in OT was horrific defensive coverage by Jack Quinn. He literally let Keller skate right by him.
I went into this game thinking “I’ll be happy if we can just get a point”. We were missing 4 of our top 6 forwards, and playing a good team. And then I watched Keller skate directly past all 3 of our guys in overtime and bury a goal from 2 feet away from the crease. It wasn’t even like some highlight real goal, his brilliant strategy was to skate directly at the net and shoot from close range, he faced 0 resistance and it just worked. Still happy with the point but Jesus our OTs have got to get better.
Right now the east is super tight. I can see places being decided on ot wins/losses. Buffalo! Don't you dare! 😋
They played well considering only getting one point. Utah has a pretty good team. Paterka wasn't a factor at all.
I mean…….Buffalo is on a 7 or 8 game point streak now.
You wonder when we will see much separation in the standings. So much parity. The last place team one win from being tied for first?! Yikes.
The longer Tuch goes without a extension it leads to 2 outcomes (because Buffalo should not give Tuch $11.5milx8)- he stays & leaves as a UFA or he is traded as part of another in season hockey trade. Adams has done a better job of rebuilding the goalie talent in the pipeline. The waiver claim of Ellis is to give Buffalo another option for at least this season to turn to. Levi has to play in 29 more NHL games to lose his waiver claim exemption (at least this season) so he is not going anywhere. Lyon showing early that he is a 1A goalie puts Buffalo in a much better spot with their goalie situation. UPL signed for another 3 seasons is a plus if he can show that he is a steady top 15/16 starter. I see a hockey trade (at least one) happening sometime during the season. With Rosen & Ostlund starting to put up NHL points it will give Adams more trade options to make that in season hockey trade. Adams with Ruff is a good combination because together they are putting the Sabres into a much better position for this season & beyond. Pegula needs to stay patient with the Adams/Ruff combo.
