Flyers goalie Sam Ersson doesn’t have a whole lot of believers going into the 2025-26 season. But there’s a prime opportunity for him to take a step in the right direction with head coach Rick Tocchet behind the bench.

As a person, Im a fan of Ersson . However, he has not looked like a starter through training camp/preseason, Dan Vladar looked like a more legitimate "Starter" by quite a bit to me. Who am I? Ive been ocd analyzing hockey/goaltending since I was 11yrs old in 1991-92 and chose Eric Lindros and Hextall as my 2 favorite players having seen Eric play for Oshawa in person front row. I'm not suggesting I know everything or am "always right" by qny means, just that Ive done possibly hundreds of hours of analysis every season for 32 years. Ersson, would need to have a career year and be a top ten goalie this year, and then repeat it from this point forward, which I dont see happening. The whole "developement" process for goalies is broken, they have to stop overcooking goalies and let em fly. 18-22 you find out who they are. Patrick Roy was Prime Roy at 20. Tom Barasso came in pre 20. Fleury? Started almost right away in Pitts. At 25-26 Ersson is a backup unless he gets numbers in the shocking range this year. The organization is just saying what they have to while they kill time in hopes of Zavragin being a "Hasek" type soon, or maybe acquiring a top 5 goalie if one becomes available.
I want him to finish with 90.999
2.79
2 shutouts
23 wins
Skeptical, yes, but I'm open to being pleasantly surprised
There is absolutely zero evidence or reason to think Ersson is an NHL goalie let alone a #1. Briere is setting himself up for failure as he keeps stating he believes in Ersson.
He had a better sv percentage than .833 last year I think that was a typo
I'm interested in what his performances were like pre-NHL. Was he ever elite, or above league average anywhere he played? Gotta look that up π
