  1. It'd be funny if Toronto misses the playoffs… for sure the media in Toronto wouldn't talk about Marner then 😅

  2. happy with my jackets tonight! felt a bit bad that elvis let 2 in during the last half of the third but thank god that lead was padded nice

  3. This is a textbook example of a matchup between one team with heart and a fire in their bellies, and another team that’s just completely checked out and expects success just to be handed to them. Personally, I think the Leafs missing the postseason would be just the wakeup call they need. They’re already proving the rot in this organization goes much deeper than just Marner.

  4. Nick Roberson should definitely be a top 6 player. I remember a couple of years ago he played against his brother, had a fantastic game and scored a goal… and was scratched straight after. How NHL coaches reason is beyond me.

  5. Listening to the leaf announcers was comical at the end of the game. Trying to evaluate what is different from last year. Lololol said a lot of dumb shit and left out the main factor…NO MARNER BOYS. lololol maybe a wildcard if you're lucky

  6. It’s a bad loss for the Leafs, but honestly, Merzlikins could have bent Auston Matthews over his knee and spanked him for an hour straight, and no one in Toronto would’ve cared.

  7. On the Bardown podcast, they said, and I agree, that the Maple Leafs are lucky the Jays are doing well in the World Series because it distracts Toronto fans. But the World Series will be over soon, so all the attention will be back on them, they have to figure this out until then!

  8. 1:30 Absolutely agree, crazy to me how shitty his contract is when the dude pulls in 15 goals in 69 games on the 4TH LINE with 12 minutes/game of ice time. Then Craig Berube talking about finding a "true top 6 forward" to fill the line-up while they have Nicky just feels like a slap in the face. My ideal top 6 would be Knies, Matthews, Nylander for the 1st line and Maccelli, Tavares, and Robertson for the 2nd line.

  9. A lot of charity given to TOR in this recap. It's probably best that only the entire hockey world minus TOR watched the game. A few notables:

    * Coyle's puck on goal line at 0-0 was removed by the defender's hand completely covering the puck for quite a long time before sliding the hand, while it was still completely covering the puck, under himself. Given that this occurred in the blue paint, it should have been a penalty shot or an awarded goal.

    * Blais' goal was bunted in with a high stick, not gloved. His stick was at shoulder level, and he jumped/left the ice during the shot. In a different game scenario that gets challenged and possibly overturned, but CBJ has evidently learned enough lessons already about NHL game management as a small market team with no attendance issues in a 2-0 game state, and their confidence was well-placed.

    * TOR managed to hem CBJ in deep in their zone at the end of the second period; every CBJ player chalked a 3minute shift on game 2 of a B2B (both teams were on it), but TOR could not generate separation or any quality chances, even with this advantage.

    * Lorenz was in no way helped into the boards by Christiansen; there was nothing there to call.

*Tavares' goal was offsides, evident at 8:50 in SN game recap. In a different scenario that gets challenged and almost certainly overturned, but CBJ chose not to add insult to injury, and their confidence was well-placed.

    * CBJ rested Zach Werenski and the top line for half of the third period, with Werenski averaging >5mins less TOI than average in the game. Dmitry Voronkov (5/5/10, +8 in 10gp) had third lowest TOI on the team, and this is only due to Miles Wood being a faster skater to the bench (1 second more TOI than Wood). Kirill Marchenko (5/5/10, +6 in 10gp) was 6th-lowest in TOI, and rested for the entire final 7:35 of the game. It was during the interval where all CBJ top players were resting that the 2 TOR garbage time goals occurred.

While Elvis had a good game, anyone watching could clearly see that this was a complete domination. The shots don't tell the story. TOR depth in the absence of Nylander simply couldn't match the grit or speed of CBJ, particularly their bottom 6.

  10. I was at the game but headed out just before the Tavares goal. From what I heard the Columbus PA announcer did announce that it was Tavares's 500th goal. He did get a little love from the CBJ crowd but it wasn't robust. At least that is what I heard from a buddy. Grats to Tavares. I didn't think Christiansen deserved a penalty when the Leafs player went into the boards. I thought the contact was pretty incidental, and unintentional, and it was just the Leafs player being off balance and his own momentum carried him into the boards awkwardly.

  11. 5 goals for Matthews, but 2 are empty netters. Other than those, he has a very pedestrian 3 goals and 6 points in 11 games, despite playing 22 minutes a night. Leafs are absolutely cooked if Matthews doesn't find another gear soon.
