The teams have had uneven starts to their 25th seasons as American Airlines Center’s tenant couple, but their struggles on the court and the ice appear benign compared to the behind-the-scenes strife in the organizations’ relationship.
Late Tuesday morning, Mavericks ownership filed in Texas Business Court a 253-page petition for injunctive relief against Stars ownership, seeking legal finality on a breach of contract dispute the Mavericks raised in October 2024.
The Mavericks allege the Stars are in breach of a clause in their 1998 franchise agreement that requires their corporate headquarters to be located within the city of Dallas, while also claiming in the injunction that the Stars have obstructed further maintenance and improvements to American Airlines Center. The Stars’ headquarters and practice facility have been located in Frisco since 2003.
Both the Stars and Mavericks, who have shared the arena since it opened in 2001, could leave AAC after the current lease ends in 2031, with the Mavericks seeking to build a new basketball-only arena in Dallas and the Stars entertaining offers from other cities, including Plano. The News also reported Tuesday that the Stars are eyeing a $1 billion arena at the Shops at Willow Bend Mall site.

Fuck the Adelsons
No sympathy for the stars sincerely Minnesota
Houston Aeros
The ironic thing about the A's-Raiders Coliseum situation is that beginning in 2028 both the A's & Raiders are projected to be in the same city again this time in Vegas, though they will be playing in separate venues (though I think the A's will pivot to moving to Utah due to the guaranteed funding for a new ballpark there & all of the funding problems associated with their new stadium in Vegas.)
Im on the mavs side fuck the stars. Hahahaha
It feels like the Mavs new owners are finding a way to demoralize fans to justify a move
The weirdest part about the Stars and Mavs fighting over the AAC is that it sure seems like both teams are intent on leaving it. The second weirdest part of it is that the AAC is still one of the ten newest arenas in the NHL. And it's still one of the nicer ones, but alas the area around the arena is largely developed by business that aren't the Stars or Mavs, so it's go bye bye time. And that makes me sad.
dude. the AAC is NOT, i repeat, NOT, an aging venue!!!! it is STILL a very top notch arena. some say its stilll literally in the top 10 of both nba and nhl arenas! its SOOOOO nice!!
Aren’t the Mavs trying to get a new arena with a casino and entertainment area?
After seeing this, I'm glad that the Mammoth and Jazz have the same ownership group in Utah. You have Jazz players at Mammoth games and Mammoth players at Jazz games. They even announced that they're building a new practice facility for the Jazz next door to the new Mammoth facility and they'll be connected so the players can interact with each other!
8:49 – "built at the turn of the century" still messes me up because yeah, I know that Y2K was *a* turn of the century but in my mind it's not *THE* turn of the century…
That being said, there's a similar situation going on in Philly between the 76ers and the Flyers who currently share the same venue but the Sixers have been trying to build a new arena for the better part of a decade but the umbrella corporation that owns the current building also owns the Flyers and it's in their financial best interest to undermine the Sixers plan to move out
The Adelson family ate horrible people. Mark Cuban is a jerk for selling the team to the devils. I have zero respect for Cuban after the sell. Cuban is the Howard Schultz of Dallas. He sold the team knowing that those people want to move the team to Vegas. Clay Bennett NEVER wanted to own the Seattle Supersonics. He wanted Oklahoma City to have an NBA team.
should throw stars out and send them back to minny where they belong. mavs were in dallas before the stolen stars arrived. and y'all SAPS for paying big time sports $$$'s.
It looks to me like both teams don’t want to be left holding a bag at the other’s actions. That is why each team has done what it has. Nothing personal, just business.
I see this happening with the Celtics & Bruins
Automatically siding with the Mavs, the stars have done 1. This 2. Took a hockey team out of MINNESOTA 3. Created a ridiculous monopoly on kids hockey
i’m a stars ticket holder i see nothing wrong with arena . definitely seems the Mavs want out but now i hear the stars want to move closer to their fan base in northern burbs on Plano / frisco area . location actually will be amazing though
The AAC is a perfectly fine arena in the middle of downtown Dallas. If either wants to leave let them pay for a new place.
If they want to go to Vegas or Seattle they could easily threaten loud enough that the NBA not wanting to lose the Dallas Market grants them an expansion team while they sell the Mavs to local ownership for a tidy profit.
Thank God things stuff like this hasn't happened here in Boston between the Celtics and Bruins. I'm stunned that this is happening in Dallas since both teams are typically competitive. You'd think Dallas has a good thing going. I can't wait to see how this whole mess plays out.
I'm not a fan of either team (I'm from Toronto), but I don't want to see either team flounder or end up moving. Both teams have become pretty iconic, and it's not good for anyone for either franchise to fail. Let the Stars go to Frisco (maybe have Dude Perfect — also from Frisco — join them in some way in the new project's construction!), and NBA can give the current Mavs ownership a new team in Vegas, while selling the Mavs to keep them in Dallas under new ownership there, who can start rebuilding trust with fans. That solves SOME of it… but sorry we can't get Luka back there… some things can't be fixed after they're broken.
Mariam adelson lives where?
The effing mavericks spent a lot of money lobbying Texas government to get gambling legal in Texas and it didn't work. Now they want to recoup their money so they're going after the Stars. Mavs move to effing vegas NOW!!!! Get the eff out NOW!!!! Stars come to Arlington Texas. There's land for your arena and village.
American Airlines should take their name off the building and save millions while the children fight over a shared toy.
It makes me so mad when teams describe their 25-year-old buildings as "aging" and then use that as fuel to pressure cities to fork over tax money. 25 years old is not old. The AAC is a great building and absolutely could go another 25 years or more with some renovations. It's smack in the middle of downtown, easily accessible by DART, and unlike a lot of modern glass blobs, it actually looks like it belongs in the area where it sits. Hell, they've already dumped millions into things like a new jumbotron and new seats.
There is absolutely no reason to throw AAC away when there are still Honda Civics on the road and driving that are older than that.
Edit: It takes stooping to a breathtaking level of awful to make Stars ownership look like the good guys, considering the kind of price-gouging and racketeering they're shamelessly engaged in at the grassroots level of the sport throughout the region. That story broke just a month or two ago.
Another edit: DFW resident here. It's "A-A-C," not "double-A-C" I don't know anyone who calls it the latter.
Seems like the Mavs went downhill when Mark Cuban left.
THIS IS PAVELSKI'S ARENA
Don’t care about hockey and hate the mavs new ownership….so whatever
American airlines center is a pretty great arena but they shouldn't share arenas
I was just there Sunday for a mavs game it was one of nicest arenas i have been in. It had no dated feel or look. It was clean and rather homey looking for a arena. Sometimes i don’t understand the need for these major upgrades teams want to spend.
The only mav in dallas that matters is named Bourque
As a person of both fans, I have to side with the Stars on this one. No it's not because of the Luka trade as that's what basically everyone is siding with the Stars on for this suit, but it's something more interesting.
Last month the Stars announced that they were thinking about moving to Plano, Tx and building a new $1 Billion stadium. The Mavs did not like this so they sued them as the Mavs were saying they were not paying the light bill. HOWEVER 2 years ago, the mavs openly announced they would be building a New Casino with Arena attached to it, in the same spot as old Cowboys Stadium in Irving. The Stars saw this and put there hands up and said "Well you do you." And now here we are today, with the Mavs feeling as if the Stars announcing the thought, not the guarantee, the thought of a new stadium away from the AAC, is a lawsuit that is deserving of one of the teams staying when the other one is going to leave. This is on the Mavs for doing what they did. The Luka trade just made it 10x's worse publically and more likely everyone will root for the Stars.
Please stop comparing every situation to Oakland. The AAC is a new, still-premier arena that anchors a vibrant neighborhood next to downtown Dallas. It is not decaying or decrepit. The issues are the usual ones for teams that share arenas: revenue and date control plus ongoing maintenance. It's not that complicated. If the Stars move out to the suburbs, best of luck to them. If this is analogous to anything, it's the Clippers vacating Staples Center and building in Inglewood. And the last time I checked, the Stars don't have Ballmer money.
I lived in Dallas for several years and never heard anyone call it the "Double A C". I always heard it referred to as the "A A C".
It’s always been the A A C. Double A, someone lied to you if you think that’s true.
I worked for the Center Operating Company; the joint venture owned by the Stars and Mavs from 2008-2021. We went through a lot starting with Stars (and Rangers) owner Tom Hick's financial problems which had the team taken over by the league. I was supposed to get a nominal raise for the 2011-12 season. Well, the NBA had a lock out. No prob. I'll get it next year. Well, the NHL had lock out. A few years later, Mark Cuban decided we didn't make enough (I sure as hell didn't do the job for the money) and consulted with Stars owner Tom Galardi and we got a substantial raise so things were a little better.
It's called both the A A C and Double AC. Some tried to call it "The Hangar" (since it's REALLY the American Airlines Center) but that didn't catch on.
This is hilarious. I despise both teams. Both teams suck I only root for the Rangers.
One year ago the Stars were wanting to stay at the AAC and Mavs wanted to change. The reason this has changed is, no casino district for Mavs they never changed the legislation despite millions lobbied. Stars want to leave because Mavs and City are acting poorly how they are treating the Stars.
Nobody calls it the double-A C
