Patrik Laine’s injury has major cap implications — but the Montreal Canadiens won’t be using LTIR, and we break down exactly why. In this episode of The Starr & D’Amico Show, Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico explain how Laine’s situation impacts the NHL cap landscape, what it means for Montreal’s flexibility, and why Kent Hughes is staying away from LTIR space this season.

We break down the Habs’ cap management strategy, the risks of using LTIR, and how the Canadiens are positioning themselves for future trades and long-term flexibility.

  1. I don't think Laine gets back in the lineup when he's healthy, unless we have a bunch of injuries. Not a cap space thing, he's just not good enough when this team is fully healthy

  2. I was remarking over the summer that I wished Patrik was working on his skating as much as his one timer. It's hard not to envision a correlation between his shooting mechanics and his core…

  3. But that means they can use the 20 million regular season cap to acquire players and go over the playoff cap and then leave Laine off the playoff roster? Unless they move him.

  4. This cap space and how LTIR works is so dang confusing but thank you Marco for breaking it down like you did. This was explained well and I get it now. Kudos man!

  5. I said from day one when there were rumors about getting this guy that it was not going to work out. And here we are. Can't wait to NOT bring this guy back and open up 8.7 million to a much better player.

  6. I still dont understand why a team would pick up a dead $10Million contract. And if they do take it, why didnt they get a significant draft pick (s)? If a team needs to make the salary floor, better to pick up a few two-way players or minor league prospects, no??

  7. To Shawn and anybody and their ridiculous theory about Laine and making the playoffs 🤦‍♂

Before Laine’s return the habs pp was 10th in the league , after the arrival of Laine it finished 22nd , most of Patrick Laine’s goals wouldn’t have change the outcome on most games , he scored most of his goals against bottom feeders and led the team in turn overs. 9 of his goals were scored on a 12 day stretch , then nothing . Patrik Laine killed more pp chances and created more turnovers overs than what his meaningless goals were worth and I believed that caufield would have scored more important goals and so would the whole pp unit would if they didn’t felt pressure to pass the puck to Laine which became predictable and explains why the pp dropped to the bottom 10 . It is moronic at best to think that Laine is a reason why the habs made the playoffs last year , the fact is they almost missed the playoffs due to Laine’s poor play .

Saying that Laine is the reason the habs made the playoffs is wild and is and embarrassing claim , especially finishing at -14 , with five goals at five on five while leading the youngest team in the league for turnovers as a vet in only 52 games

The call up of Dobes and the outstanding penalty killing of Armia and Evans was the reason why the habs made the playoffs . I’d take Armia with a broken leg before Patrik Laine.
