The Montreal Canadiens are in the market for a true second-line center — and the trade market is starting to take shape. Could Nazem Kadri be the answer? What about Ryan O’Reilly or Bo Horvat? We break down Pierre LeBrun’s comments, potential trade fits, and which direction Kent Hughes might take as the season unfolds.
Join Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico on The Starr & D’Amico Show, as we debate which veteran center could best help the Canadiens take the next step, how each player fits into Martin St-Louis’ system, and what it might cost to get a deal done.

Why not Brayden Schenn, not such a big contract.
Omi goodness do not add a 35 year old center who is signed for 4 more years at $7 million.
Play Kapanen. Goodness.
Yes a useless veteran center two years from now is not what you want.
Man do not give up Kapanen for Kadri.
Dach is useless. I'd trade him but not for Kadri.
Yes Kadri would be a could fit but I would much prefer the Habs going after Bo Horvat!
Much rather add Bo Horvat or Ryan O'Reilly
Ist round pick,Dach, Roy for Kadri
Good show! Timely topic… 🙂
(1) Anyone who puts the Canadiens on a no-trade list is probably more concerned with money than winning a cup, or maybe they just cannot take the pressure of a real hockey city. The only word I have for it is, "Duh!" Montreal is a fun city with a great hockey tradition, and their team is on the rise!
(2) It seems to me that a four-year contract at $7M cap hit (ending after 2028-29) seems reasonable, (although he is going past his prime age) just as Patrick Laine deal was worth the risk. But what prospects and current assets do we lose?
(3) The center we should look for is someone who can work with Demidov, first and foremost. (I know Kapanen and Newhook have had success this year, but I think it is more because they are playing with Demidov.) Can old man keep up with Demidov? I think we need to build a line around Demidov, and the 2C we get must be able to handle it.
(4) I agree about the specter of Kadri's discipline adding to the risk. Even if he has matured, he has also aged. If we put him on a second line with a lot of minutes, he is prone to get tired and make discipline mistakes.
(5) On the good side, he is a solid left-handed center, but 47% face off is probably not the left-handed center we need.
(6) Martin St Louis would probably love to have Steven Stamkos. (Remember when he cried when Marty was traded from the Lightning?) Marty will know what to do with him. Stamkos has over 50% face offs, but he is right handed. Here is where we need Bolduc to join that line to serve a Slaf-like role and take face offs when you want a lefty (so he would have to keep working on face offs like he was this summer).
(7) Jordan Kyrou came up last summer, and didn't he play with Bolduc effectively? If so it woudl be easy to add Demidov to that line. Demidov can elevate anyone's game.
I love how everybody wins with the Dobson/Heinemann deal!
Trocheck is also a nice fit !
why does everyone think they will get a 2C? I have a feeling they don't do much, the plan is hage, and seeing who else is out there. Kadri would be graet for 2 years, but the price will be too high IMO
Get us Ryan O'Reilly PLEASE he's MONEY !!!!
Yes shawn,he checks boxes in getting him but also the opposite, a 2 sides of the coun imo, i say no.a big maybe at trade line when 3 year left.
Great topic! I like the options of Kadri or O'Reilly, but with Kadri I do not like his age so I am on the fence with Kadri and with O'Reilly it would be a better fit but what would be the return requested for either player given that they are aging players … As far as Bo Horvat goes, he would be ideal, but I agree that it would be a pipe dream. On my radar would be Robert Thomas out of St.Louis and Teuvo Teräväinen out of Chicago if both teams are on the outside looking in of a playoff position come late November mid-December. That said, I suspect that if a center comes to Montreal via trade, it may very well be somebody that we never expected, but a hell of a player.
oreilly lost a lot of speed didnt he?
Kadri only at 50% salary paid so when he drops in the lineup eventually he won't be overpaid.
Calgary should 100% tank. Beyond obvious.
I lol'd at the Navi 'HEY!' text notification
The good thing about Kadri is that imo you can get him for tier two players and prospects. Imo they would 100% take Dach for starters.
Marco if hage needs extra time why not offer/sign O'Reilly an extra year or 2. to me better then kadri's 4 years. O'Reilly a decision can be made year by year
No
For those who want to keep guys like Dach, Beck, Kap, Engstrom, etc you can't keep everybody. Plus you can't waste Suz, CC, Hutson, etc good salary years anymore developing multiple guys here.
I thought O'Reilly doesn't want to leave Nashville and doesn't want to play in a large media market.
No way Stamkos.
I don't see how they can get Horvath without giving up Hage or Reinbacher.
Just wait until Pittsburgh tanks (it's gonna happen later in the season) and go get Crosby.
Love your haircut, Shaun. It suits you.
There is absolument no reason for the Islanders to trade Horvat unless the return is an offer they cannot refuse. The Habs have zero interest in doing that. They would need to give Hage, Reinbacher and a first draft pick, at a minimum. You just do that, especially after you are so successful staying the course with your reconstruction. Hughes is master at finding the right deal, he is not one to bet the house.
Kadri? No thanks
Why would kadri cost more than cozens did… to me he should be much cheaper except if calgary retain 50%
No thank you very much. Kadri was a great player, now he's a good player who has value more to Calgary than the Habs. Let the season evolve a bit, we have points in the bank and can be selective.
Tage Thompson please HuGo.
About Stammer, if he leave Nashville, isn't coming in the same organisation as his buddies Marty and Vinny Make sense?
BIG NOOOO KADRI
What are you talking about, Shaun? Engstrom or Kapanen for Kadri? Get out of here. Kadri is worth a draft pick and maybe a Roy type player at most. You guys are way overvaluing a declining Kadri.
Engstrom NO WAY! Paying Kadri until age 39 is not smart in my opinion.
