Penguins Postgame: the bad grades, really bad grades, & play the rookies

  1. That shootout was painful to watch. I don't mind an occasional dud game this early in the year. It means were finding out what lines and pairings work out early in the season instead of shuffling around everything for over half the season. I think the boys are confident that this was not indicative of their capabilities and that's a very good thing. There's quite an upside to all of this. Last year they would've lost 6 – 2. This year they fight back and force OT. They've even shown a commanding presence late game and winning. I'm very much hopeful.

  2. Thanks Dan! Yes, painful game. . . Even though overall they didn't play well, they stuck with it and came back to force the OT. I see they still haven't solved their SO woes. . . But, I guess, a point is a point. . . Yes, need to play the rookies. . . Have a great night, Dan. . .

  3. Man malkins the worst at shootouts. I knew when he was up that was it and sure enough a weak backhand later it was 5-4 Columbus. Hes a hall of famer but lets stick him lower than 3rd shot next time PLEASE

  4. They came back got a point so that's positive. Stop the Negative crap they playing way better then last year, but it seem no one is satisfied. . Tired of bashing should be supportive,

  5. A problem that is starting to fester is the Penguins are getting out shot just about every game, not good…trying to figure out if its part of the system, or just a mindset that has to change…but Florida and now Columbus seem to have figured something out and it bears watching…starting to like Novak, a couple of slick plays again tonight…Hollander is solid…Broz, A. Hayes, or McGroarty easily replace Tomasino…Letang played great tonight…the Penguins are getting very good goaltending so far this season, so its imperative we get points will they're hot

  6. I'm surprised you didn't mention Silovs. He was pretty good and kept them in the game, stopping 37 of 41 shots(!). I have a bad feeling that with each game the goalies will have a harder time as the Penguins have been getting outshot lately.

  7. Funny thing is we were just a few bounces away from scoring 2 more goals ourselves, especially in overtime. Literally if it wasn’t for the defenseman’s stick we would have won and gotten a full 2 points. Lol I understand his points he’s making in this video but at the same time I think it’s slightly overboard this team does seem different the last 2-3 years yes we would have probably lost 6-2 or something but we battled back and got a point out of it. I do definitely agree about the rookies playing tho. They have to play! And yes the 3rd line is definitely by far the weakest on the team tho.

  8. I'm not too sure what to think of the new coach's gameplan. Every game I've watched with Kindel in it I have noticed him and he has his nose in the play, and whether its load management or getting other guys into the lineup, Kindel needs to play, and I say the same for Brunick. Watching all the games when the right guys are in, lines 3 and 4 have been great and different makers, line 2 is going and putting up the numbers, and line one is sputtering despite Sid's points. I was really hoping to see a rookie up on line one, say a Kindle and put Rust down on line three and have him mentor a few young guys. If this season is about rookies and the future, put them with Sid, and Geno and lets see what they can do. I've watched the Rust show already, one goal after nine, lets give someone else a try?

  9. We need Kindel, Brunicke, McGroarty and Koivunen in the lineup.

    1. They add a new dynamic with fresh blood.

    2. They add speed.

    3. They bring fresh legs.

These games, in particular, are games that we would have lost last year (not even getting a point) so, in that regard, we accomplished what we wanted out of this particular game, however, it should be blatantly obvious to everyone that, Kindel in particular, brings that one shot goal capability to the team (which definitely changes the dynamic).

I should also note, it is clear to see that Connor Clifton is not an NHL top 6 defensemen. I find it hard to believe that the Penguins don't have a prospect they can bring up that will be better.

This was a bad showing, by the entire team BUT we earned a point out of it.

I have to believe that Dubas and Muse see what we see and will adjust accordingly. We will find out tomorrow night.

  10. We clearly can’t ride the older guys to any sort of sustained success on their own. They looked tired tonight, and they probably should look tired. Glad to see we fought back and got a point at least

  11. The absence of Kindel and Brunicke where totally felt in this game!!!! They need to stay in the lineup……………….

  12. I thought Brazeau should have joined the PP instead of Mantha when Rakell left the game. I was really confused when he didn't go to the front of the net as a screen.

  13. I hate both shootouts and non playoff overtimes. Would much rather the NHL go back to ties. I don't think it will ever happen but gimmick hockey is garbage.

  14. I thought Hallander did very well on Sid's line when he replaced Rakell. That line seemed to really pick up, and I think it is his speed and energy. Not that Rakell lacks energy necessarily, but he's not a zoomer. Would not hate seeing a little more of that.

As for the high slot gap in the defense, I think it's less a systemic issue and more of a players attention issue. Columbus would cycle in a player into the high slot after the puck went behind the net, and none of the forwards marked that person. I would like to think the system says if you are not in the net doing the man to man, you should be looking around the top of the zone for trailers. but the team clearly was not 100% mentally on last night!

  15. Kindel doesn't have the build to go 82 yet. They need him to build up and recover properly early to be around down the stretch.

  16. Time to bring pickering up with jones out. The pens are going to miss rakell why he is out but kouvinen and kindel were building some decent chemistry before kouvinen got sent down to wbs

  17. Appreciate you staying late at the arena to give us a review of the game! Glad to hear Letang is finding the motivation to play at his best.
Getting the extra point is a win in my books, after i figuratively walked out of the arena after seeing the score at 4-2…. From the highlight reel, Malkin put in a good effort to create plays that allowed for the 2 goal comeback, the shootout doesn't define his game play.
