  1. Engstrom being able to play RD is a huge reason to sign Matheson.
Mike isn't blocking his progress. How true is the rumor he wants 4 yrs because that's easily done.

  2. If Reinbacher seems a bit unlucky with injuries a la Guhle… Matheson would be a good signing for 4-5 years, hometown pricing. Engstrom maybe better (+durable) than Reinbacher but that's to be played out.

  3. Funny to say because usually its when a player plays bad but matheson might be playing himself out of a contract with habs. Or i hope he takes a ekblad type of discount

  4. It’s not just the turnovers in the defensive zone. It’s the lack of passing, the lack of ability to get the puck through at the point, the inability to change gears when he has the park even though nobody can catch him if he does that. So that turns him into a $5 million or maybe $5.5 million player but in this new salary structure he’s gonna want over 6 million and that’s just too much for a player like that I don’t know. I love the player. I just wish she could make a few more adjustments because he has such talent. And of course he’s a Montreal guy so we all want to see him succeed. Just because he has formed a nice pairing with Dobson and he’s what Dobson needs on the breakout doesn’t mean we can’t find someone else to do that job for a lot cheaper. Nothing against him I hope he gets his money and everything. I’m just talking about the team. this comment brought to you by McLean’s pub.

  5. As far as Matheson goes, a 4 year deal @ $7.5 million/year with a no-trade clause would be my starting point. That would bring Matheson to 35 years old, I would hesitate giving a 31 year old d-man more than 4 or 5 years as far as term goes. Players older than 35 years old have a tendancy of being bought out, that said if Guhle cannot stay healthy and at least play 60 games this year, I would give Matheson 6 years for term and I would seriuously consider trading Guhle.

  6. 5×6,875,000 would be a great deal :
    (1,875,000 + Bonus : 10,000,000 ) +
    (1,875,000 + Bonus : 10,000,000 ) +
    (1,875,000 + Bonus : 5,000,000) +
    (1,875,000 ) +
    (1,875,000 )
    = 34,375,000

This is how I envision a front-loaded deal to sign Matheson. Ain't no expert like Hughes or Sedgwick, but I think this is in the range.

  7. Pretty obvious they have already agreed in principle to something or he would be gone already.

  8. The biggest problem with Matheson is that MSL overplays him. What is going on with Jackeye's playing time after 3 years here is ridiculous. Try to get a Savard-type that can skate to play with Hutson and move on.

  9. The contract comparable imo is Cam Fowler imo eventhough he is 2 years older. He signed 3 years x 6.1 million. Imo it wil be similar with a 4 or 5 year term. So 4 x 6.5 or 5 x 6.

  10. 5- 6 million for Matheson is a slap in the face IMO

7mil is a home town deal if he takes that on a shorter term. He can easily get 8.5-9 if he goes to open market. I really hope we keep him.

  11. 5.5 -6 MILLION 3-4 YEARS. Win win for both. He wants to stay in Montreal. Family and home means a great deal to him, even if he takes less. Being miserable with some other team is not worth it. Why be greedy when you can live at home, see your family, and take part in a team that will win the cup. 5.5 to 6 is nothing to sneeze at. Remember, how much does he keep after taxes. Watch both the team and him come to terms in the very near future. They will not wait. He wants to put this away so he can concentrate on his playing hockey. Why do you think he ran to talk to the Habs? A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Hughes is a wheeler dealer. He knows how to negotiate.

  12. In Hugo, we trust. Period. We finally have a Quebec born player more precisely a Montreal born player who actually loves playing in Montreal. And on top of that, these are top end defence anywhere in the NHL. So let’s go sign the guy and get this over with lol

  13. Trading Josh Anderson Micheal Hage and a 3rd round pick for Alexi Lafreniere would be a better way to spend 7 million per year. Struble and Xhekaj are ready to ink long-term for 3 or 4 million per year. Depth at forward will give the core room to flourish with player development. Good luck, Montreal Matheson is a perfect rental for 2026. ⚜️

  14. Losing Matheson would be terrible for me, and for Martin St-Louis I'm sure! Who else can play those kinds of minutes against the best lines? Last season I was one of the people in the hockey forums defending against those that couldn't forgive a single mistake Matheson ever made and blind to his qualities. I loved when Max Lapierre told the Matheson haters they were complete idiots. I'm sure Kent Hughes will pay a little less to keep him in Montreal because he is wanted and loves being a Hab.

  15. Hughes will get it done. Prob for a steal.

Matheson is a great compliment to the dcore and he can eat minutes. Also has a bit of flare himself.

Lock him up and keep the powder dry for that 2c
