How Did Tom Wilson Get Away With This Hit?!

In today’s game against the Vancouver Canucks, Tom Wilson threw a thunderous check at centre ice on Filip Chytil. Chytil was visibly concussed after this play, and the referees reviewed the play for a major penalty. Shockingly, the penalty was rescinded! Tom Wilson did not even serve a 2-minute penalty. In this video, I will argue that the hit violated Rule 46: interference.

  1. Editor's Note
I didn't read Rule 56 straight out of the NHL Rulebook, but I articulated it accurately.

  2. It was a good hit. If Tom Wilson is on the ice, keep your head up. Chytil of all people should be aware. The amount of re-watching everything was ridiculous in this game.

  3. Wilson is like a shark curdling his prey , getting to the blind spot , lurking for the kill , then Bamm !!!

  4. I don't think it was a dirty hit but I just think it was a unnecessary play that Wilson didn't have to make

  5. Frankly I’m not too sure I entirely agree here. The hit did look like a clean hit unlike what those such as Bennett currently do. We’ll see what happens from all of this but I’m not exactly that angry about it. Should Kane or Sherwood stood up to Wilson like how Nurse did against Kane? Yeah I think so. I don’t think it was necessarily a dirty hit at the end of the day.

  6. If that was an American team, there would have been a penalty and suspension. Canadian teams are not treated the same.

  7. Fire the ref, get rid of the pig, that Wilson is.
A moron, that cant count to three and doesnt care about the health of other players. Otherwise he would have learned already and changed.

  8. The issue with both hits to me, it’s that they’re blindside hits, coming in at an angle after the puck has been released. Unquestionably, the Rome hit is worse as it’s more of an extreme angle. The rule says a hit must be delivered within a 90 degree peripheral view. Whether Wilsons hit was just inside or just outside the allowable degree is less important than the fact players like Wilson will always try to play just within those rules that are meant to protect their fellow players. Guys like Wilson are out there trying to commit legal murder. They study the rules to come as close as they can to breaking them without actually breaking them, or they act with enough plausible deniability to get away with breaking them. His reputation is well documented, his list of victims long, and he’s often praised for his physical play and ability to “walk that line..” between good clean hockey hits and the regular hospitalization of his opponents.

When (not if) Chytil retires early, a video compilation of every single dirty hit this poor guy had to endure (most without supplementary discipline attached ..) should be sent to the league and to the players union so they can all see just how successfully their rules are working to protect players health and safety. As we now know that concussions do not necessarily need to be caused by direct blows to the head, could the qualifications of what constitutes a “blindside hit” and what constitutes a late hit be changed/tweaked?

Since I was young playing organized hockey I’ve heard “keep your head up, DONT admire your pass”. I’ve always very much doubted a player hit late was actually “admiring” his own pass, he’s likely looking to where the actual HOCKEY play is happening, not expecting to be hit without the puck at near full speed from the side by a players who’s only possible intent is to injure them.

  9. It wasn’t late, but it was predatory and blindsided. I don’t know if there are rules against blind sided hits, but this one was 90 degree angle.

  10. It wasn’t to the head and it wasn’t late so what call would you like? Why do people cry sooooo much for clean hits. It was under a second from releasing the puck cry babies ffs

  11. Seems to me that he did not had time to avoid contact :p. I am so used to see late hit in this league that this one seems somewhat legit. I am not a big fan of Wilson but you gotta be aware when he is on the ice. Don't look at your pass like that.

  12. Teddy Bleuger might be out aswell. Didn't play the last 6 minutes of the game. Seemed to have hurt his leg. Expect Autu Raty, Max Sasson and a callup. I'd like to see mueler but Aman could fill out a defensive fourth line

  13. Chytil, should have his head on a swivel, he keeps getting caught because he's not alert enough on the ice. He's a great talent but there are always going to be predators on the ice looking to lay a hit on you, he above all others needs to be aware of that. Where is Chytil's peripheral vision? I really like Chytil's talent but some guys can't seem to avoid injury.

  14. Classic example of everybody hating on Wilson for his past. I recommend watching the breakdown on the tough call channel. There was exactly .06 seconds from the moment chytil released the puck to when he was destroyed. Wilson never altered his path so contact was inevitable. If I have a history of concussions then I would probably learn how to keep my head up and watch out for contact, which is a constant in hockey. I'm never happy to see someone get hurt, but I watch hockey because it is the last sport we have that isn't being completely watered down in terms of physical contact. Not to mention the fact that almost every fan/player/coach would absolutely love to have a player like Wilson on their team, but since he's not, they hate him. Lie to yourselves if you want, but I'm right

  15. Thank goodness he didn’t rip the straps off his helmet because then he would have faced supplemental discipline but this was just helping end someone’s career

  16. Sorry dude but that is NOT a late hit!!! And I can't stand Washington, so I'm not biased like you clearly are.

  17. The difference is that Rome left his skates and threw a chicken wing for the ages at Hortons head, I mean you can be bias towards your team but a simple freeze frame of both contact points and the players position is night and day between Wilson and Rome

  18. Not quite sure why we are all writing off Chytil career. It might not even be a concussion.

Hopefully we can get another center, and maybe he can move to wing.

  19. Many thanks for producing interesting content. I'm not sure this hit deserved a major, but the argument for and against could be made. As you said, the tipping point is Wilson's history. The guy is a fucking disgrace to hockey – no, to humanity – and is long overdue for two years on ice – pun intended – while (if) he learns not to be a psychopath.

  20. By the letter of the law, it was not an interference. The puck does not have to be on his stick for it to be interference. You counted two steps. He touched the puck and made one step. It was point four seconds from the time the puck left his stick to the time Wilson initiated contact. if you don’t like this hit, you should not be watching hockey. This has been a part of the sport since the beginning of time.

  21. Philip Chytil should play sheltered minutes against heavy hitting physical , big teams like Washington .Chytil has limited peripheral vision and awareness maybe due to the number of concussions he has received .when the Washington broadcasters reply that they thought Chytil was out of the league on his 6th concussion years ago . Vancouver fans have been sheltered from how serious this situation is until now and that Chytil agent , present management , past management have somehow minimized how susceptible Philip Chytil is to concussion suspect ability .Then once he gets hit , they have to go into concussion protocol for at least a week 10 days . This turns the roster inside out and who should they play with Chytil when healthy enough to play . Evander Kane , Joe Lebate , Drew aIcconner .He shouldn’t play dump and chase then you need a replacement in the wings even when healthy .
