Best part of Vancouver getting Wennberg is We'll toss in Leddy for free 😅
As for Wennberg. Rumors are the wings are shopping Berggren.
I was interested in seeing what Celebrini was based on what I saw in the NHL. First overall picks sometimes impress, sometimes elite, and occasional disappoint. Not based on opinions of scouts, etc. They're pretty good at what they do, but they don;t always get it right.
What I saw last season was shocking. The scouts vastly undersold Celebrini. At age 18, to be that good, was bonkers. Yes, his season was compromised by too much ice time and probably too many games for an 18-year-old. But when rested, he was so impressive.
I attribute his 'slow start' to whatever ailed him that caused him to miss the preseason. But by the time the Isles game rolled around, it was clear Mack was back. He's on the brink of elite.
His play needs to become more refined. Example, he's wired to always pushes the pace — but there are times it needs to be dialed back. Still, its fun to watch and the more support the rest of the team provides, the tougher it'll be to slow Macklin. That may take another year or two, but when it happens, it'll be a game changer.
Vancouver is cap challenged, and given there's only 1 retention spot, so I'd hope to get full value from it. I know we'd get the spot back in July. Still, if Wennberg gets the Sharks a 2027 or even 2028 first (with some restrictions), gotta take that deal.
I'm along the lines of Wennberg (w/retention if that's what it takes) + SJS 2nd rounder for 1st + 2nd, knowing their 2nd would be later in the round than ours.
A lot of people wanted Bedard to be what Celebrini is right now. A lot of people expected Celebrini to be someone like Nico Hishier.
