Leafs are playing very poorly, why they are is the question. They seem to have no structure and no leadership, and worst of all, no spirit and no desire. I do not think its the coach, i put this directly on the players, it looks like it will be a very long season if they do not get it sorted out soon.
44 has been on the ice for every goal against twice, has been on the the ice for 50% or more goals against every game this year. 44 has been on the ice for 15 out of 21 even strength goals against.
Marner hid a lot of that bs last year from 44 last year. Dealing with 44 by playing him the most minutes on the team is on berubi. Not telling him to play his position is on berubi. How do you play a guy 22 minutes a night and watch him get lit up for 72 % of the goals against.
I said it from the day Matthews got the C ~ He's an elite caliber player, but the team needs a captain. Remember Matthews energy on his very first game. Matthews became the first player in modern NHL history to score four goals in his debut.
THAT Auston Matthews had the fire in his belly, he was NOT going to be denied, NOT going to be stopped, he was all about "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY, I'M BUSY BLOWING PAST D-MEN, UN MANNING ELITE GOALIES AND SCORING GOALS "!!
He isn't playing with that intensity, he isn't using his size, he isn't being aggressive, he's becoming a "float and hope". YES, those sneaky one timers where he was somehow able to weasel around at his size unnoticed, and he would get himself a hole in perfect position for the wicked one timer and he would bury it 9 out of 10 times!
Well, after 9 years teams are onto that sneaky shit, they're not taking their eyes off of Matthews and those sneaky fargun bastage weasel moves are much more difficult to pull off.
So, those kind of highlight goals are awesome and fans go retarded for it, but he could just as easily use his size, speed and puck handling prowess and he could weave, bob, wobble and rob into a position where he could unleash another deadly weapon on his arsenal, he has a wicked hard, fast and accurate wrist and slap shot!!
Matthews has all those elite level skills and he's not using them! He's becoming a "float n hope" player. If you float around long enough you'll eventually get an opening, but that's only half of that tactic, you have to HOPE someone A) spots you in that open position and HOPE B) whoever sees you and has the puck is able to get it to you at just the right area of the ice to enable you to get a fast accurate shot on net.
A player like Matthews can pull this off, but even Matthews has to rely on all the factors, step by step that leads up to those opportunities which makes it a low percentage opportunity.
Matthews has got to stop thinking he can finesse himself 60 goals and he has to find the fire in his belly again, he has to use his size, strength, speed and his ability to read the table (ice enemy & friendly positions) recognize opportunities which are open but he also has to create opportunities.
Matthews is an elite player. he's nit a captain, sorry for my brothers and sisters who love the player as much as I do, but let's keep it real, kidding ourselves or hoping things will develop on their own somehow some way isn't going to help advance this team.
They have really good skill on all four lines and one of the very best defense the team has had in a very long time. But every squad needs a captain and captains are so much more than just elite snipers, captains lead snipers, captains lead from the front lines and in the barracks.
Honestly, I don't see a captain in this lineup currently. I'm still getting familiar with the new blood and I really like what I see, Treliving did his part and he did a damn good job. Now, at what point is it up to the leaders to step forward take the reins and guide this team to success?
I don't see a captain here, and it's a real issue with this team because there's no one making players accountable, there's no Messier to grab solid players by the scruff of the neck in the locker room because they've become lazy or too comfortable, and scare the game back into them!
It's no easy task, but the player this team desperately needs is "Wendel Clark" "Doug Gilmour" "Gary Roberts" do they make those players anymore? Yes, but they are fewer and far between.
In order to get a player as close to that as you possibly can, you are going to have to pull on your big-boy NHL GM pants on and you will pay blood for blood.
In other words, this team in in a window RIGHT NOW, they don't have the luxury of having many prospects or picks to use thanks to "Team Dubahan" It's obvious and it IS gonna hurt, but Cowan. Danford, Chadwick, Hildeby and Akhtyamov must be in play because if you don't have something substantial to offer you'll NEVER get the kind of top 3 winger and offensive defense-quarterback this team MUST ACQUIRE THIS YEAR if they hope to and if they are serious about really putting the team into the open slot beside whoever the other finalist team FLORIDA happens to be.
TIME is a HUGE factor here, the team cannot afford to screw around another season. Treliving MUST get thos two pieces and the sooner the better.
Look at it this way also. Say you just don't want to let go of homegrown talent because the Leafs are one of those teams that don't put enough emphasis on developing players from within, and say you keep Cowan, Danford, Hildeby and Akhtyamov.
You can obviously do that, now ask yourself this question how many players on the current roster will be here when the team is in a position to challenge for the cup? By the time Cowan and company are considered legitimate top level talent in this league, NONE of the current roster will still be here.
Matthews won't sign another extension, not if he wants to win a cup before he retires.
So, THIS IS A CRITICAL SEASON and the team MUST win this season because the odds of them stepping up another notch next season are zero to minus zero!
Treliving has been given the green light to SPEND! SPEND! SPEND! WE WANNA WIN NOW!!!
In my opinion, and please brothers and sisters tell me if you think I'm wrong but, this team CAN win the cup THIS SEASON!!! BUT NOT WITHOUT a top three winger and an elite offensive defensemen quarterback!!

Mattews needs to be stripped of the Captaincy and throw him on the 2nd line. Move JT and Nylander up. No one gets the "C" until they can prove that they are the boss on and off the ice. But with that said, the entire team has to be willing to go to war under your leadership game after game. It is time to either start a fire sale to get individuals who are leaders or willing to play rock'em sock'em hockey. The leafs play scared, intimidated and play with a team identity that they are pussies. That is who they are.
Well Todd McLellan called out the Red Wings after their season opener lost to the Montreal canadiens and now look at them.. but for what it's worth the Red Wings are already structured and built the right way…
Hopefully it works for the Maple Leafs.. the concern is though they're not built that way tho😅.. so I'm not sure they'll respond as efficiently as the Red Wings did with their coach.
