With the Hutson extension, Montreal should be a strong team in the Atlantic for at least the next half decade.

More than anything, I like the character of the players on the roster. Real team players with positive attitudes. And they look like they are having so much fun together. You can't put a price on that. That said, can you imagine Carey Price in his prime with this group?
ya things are looking good, but I disagree with you Shannon in that Montreal is still in need for a top #2 center. Kirby Dach is not going to cut it, he just isn't. Even if he stayed healthy is not a power forward that is going to pull in 50-60-70 points in a season. We need that.
I don't follow the habs that close, but last year in the playoffs, i thought they were the scrapiest team out there. You could tell they're young and hungry, imo.
Jeff Gorton deserves recognition for hiring Kent Hughes. Gorton's key to everything happening in Montreal.
Zharovsky, Engstrom
I think the Laine NHL experiment is coming to an end soon…
I agree with you Shannon I think Montreal is building something special. It's a very different approach then what Toronto did and I think what this produces the players that really want to be there and want to win with the team.
Hans have a bright future yes, but they still need a good 2c and they need to play SIGNIFICANTLY better defense if they ever want out of the first 2 rounds.
He's my favorite player, the way he controls the puck is insane
THG Broadcast from Bermuda or Barbados!
Leafs fans are wishing their team did this with their core
A bona fide top 2 center besides Suzuki is what they are still missing.
One thing people aren't looking at with the Luke Hughes vs Lane Hutson comparison is that Luke only gets a 1 mil signing bonus the first 2 years of his contract and nothing in bonuses after that. Hutson starts at 11 mil signings bonus the first 2 years then 9.5, 6.5, 6 and 5. So Hutson will be making more actual salary than Luke to start at 12 mil total. It's not all about AAV. Bonus money like that means you can't buy him out. He also makes 12 mil in the minors which means you can't send him down. The lower AAV for Hutson is balanced with the bonus and contract extras. Same with Luke Hughes, the higher AAV is blanced with the little to no bonuses and no extra $ if he's sent down (not that it would happen)
Regardless if the Habs have great success in the years to come, it shows that the players who are here WANT to be playing here, for the first time in a very long time. They are fun to watch, THEY care if they don't play well and as a fan, that's what I want to see. Yes winning is fun, playoff success is exciting but at the end of the day, if they are playing their hearts out, I am happy.
they have such a good young core, as a canucks fan, I wanna see Montreal show Canada who is boss again hahaha. but anyways this is how to build a contender, "cough cough" canucks.
Time
You can't but admire what Montréal is doing. Honestly it's a miracle if this team doesn't win a cup in the not too distant future. As a Florida fan they are the one team that would genuinely terrify me in a playoff series once they mature a bit.
Bolduc with 3 goals in 3 game so far at not even a million cap hit for the year is looking great. I am expecting an extension if he keeps playing this way
he just got extended for 5 years
Bergevin to Hughes was such an unbelievable upgrade. Idc who the player is, I 100% trust that Hughes will get them signed to a great deal and he'll let go of the right people. I would trust him with my life.
Youngest team in the league this year! The future is bright in Mtl! Can you imagine we would have pick Mitchkov over Reinbacher @pick #5!! The only Hughes mistake
Next Canadian team to win?
Regarding the “disaster years” in 21-22 and 22-23, a major reason for this is the historic and record breaking injury levels they had (broke the record 2 years in a row!), which had them sink much lower than they otherwise should have been… surprised this is rarely mentioned. It was awful (and ridiculous) at the time, but in hindsight it was a blessing in disguise as it allowed them to get some of players they have now. If Price and Weber were playing, they never would have finished that low. 🙂 Exciting times ahead, and I have been saying for years that it will be Montreal to break the Canadian cup drought. 😉
Habs need a another center other then that there a solid team
I predict that within 2 years, they will sign Crosby or Mcdavid.
Kent went and traded for Dobson because he knows Reinbacher is most likely a bust or a long term project.
Given the choice of 70M in 8 years or 85M in 8 years … isn't really an issue. Hutson's 70M contract was front loaded, he will receive 24M in the first two years, almost all of it the form of bonus and he'll be able to invest it right away. He has the potential to make more than an 85M salary spread evenly over 8 years. It's a brilliant move because it gives the GM room to make the team better down the road. Their prospect system is loaded with talent. The so-called core is all on the same page, long term. No outrageous superstar salaries and egos. Team concept. Smart rebuild.
Would y’all rather have Luke Hughes at his price or Hutson at his price? Or how about Nick Suzuki at his price of 7.8 versus the majority of overpaid players. Kaprizov 10 mil better then Suzuki? hahaha give me a break. Imagine if Montreal had a tax advantage we could get these guys even cheaper. And it’s cause the players are having fun playing for Marty St. Louis along with the best fans in the league.
What about mooney?
It creates space for Crosby
As a Montreal fan, when I finally saw Hutson being signed, not only was I happy, but the opportunities this gives to the team is amazing. This gives us a chance. A chance, is all it takes! Next three years will define this generation of players. Go Habs go!
You forgot Engstrom. He is looking pretty good on D.
When serious taking starts end of November, Habs might be able to score a very good 2C.
One thing you might be missing on the board is the player ages. Signing young players long term is very different than signing older players
5/5
Go Habs Go !
What a difference a GM makes! The player-friendly, respectful attitude of Kent Hughes vs. the adversarial approach Marc Bergevin used. No wonder nobody wanted to come to Montreal before.
The best part of building such a culture is that some players on the FA market might just be interested at signing at a discount price for a real chance at the cup. Who knows? We might get our 2nd center this summer.
Montreal doesn't want Kirby Dach… Bring us 87 !!!!!
You are right Shannon.
The Habs are set until 2030. Set to be bottom dwellers until then.
Making the playoffs by the skin of their teeth there and there.
Great work like always
Matheson is getting extended. Probably 6-7 Mil AAV
Best contracts in the league
Great breakdown Shannon, you've truly become completely objective. You've influenced me to be also, at least to a certain extent.
That’s a fair and honest review. I believe that signing Demidov and, and likely Bolduc come first, and Dach is the ultimate wildcard. If he can stay healthy, that makes it interesting.
Matheson has been reborn, and I am here for it. Glad he wears the A.
Man I almost had a heart attack when the board tipped
If Kent Hughes manages to get Sidney Crosby in Montreal, that team goes from a playoff contender to a Stanley Cup contender.
Habs win in 2029. They need to keep A. Xhekaj. He'll play a similar role to Bouchard in the late '70s – not flashy, a good defender, and the policeman when necessary.
They are getting younger as a team. The next couple of years they will pass on Anderson and Galagher and probably a veteran defenceman. That will drop their average age to the mid 20's. I think they will keep Matheson if he signs for 5.5 for 5 years.
They may trade Struble or Reinbacker for another top center if the jury is still out on Dach.
You didn't mention Engstrom. I'm a little surprised at that
On the salary cap level you are right, it looks great. On the ice we need Crosby!
