The problem though, and you beautifully pointed this out, is that the head is the initial point of contact.
You say explicitly “…there’s the head move and then the shoulder…” and at no point should that be an acceptable hit. It doesn’t matter how quickly after the head is hit the rest of the body is hit, that’s not how physics works.
The amount of force directed entirely on Duchene’s head on contact is the full force and momentum of Middletons body, and that’s asking for trouble.
I’m not arguing if it’s legal or not, but head being the initial point of contact has got to be removed from the game.
