Gudbranson was a big fella. That would come handy in the playoffs. We don’t need to worry about that for now.
I’m glad Vancouver isn’t making any crazy trades or knee jerk reactions . The team is going in the right direction. The goaltending will be dealt with in time. If the Canucks miss the playoffs another 2 seasons so be it. No sense of urgency.
Why didn't PIT just keep Oleksiak? Does Gudbranson score more?
Luke Schenn looked steady in Gudbranson's place. Doesn't say much considering it's only 1 game, but considering they got someone to come straight in and take Gudbranson's role for maybe the rest of the season at a fraction of the salary is solid. I think this also starts to open up Vancouver bringing Hughes up from college near the end of the season.

Good trade for the Canucks because they opened up a spot for Quinn Hughes and they got a player who can shoot the puck. Now that he will receive more ice time he will improve. Especially playing with guys like Petterson and Horvat.
Benning said he was going to do a little work on the team this year. 1. Overhaul the D. I don't think drastically but there are some that are going to get shipped out. Guddy was one. 2. He wants a top 6 winger who can help out because there aren't any who are coming up who are close. Is a medium term fix, Pearson has 2 years remaining after this until he is a UFA. So I think this is move #1 of several
Now just get rid of Sutter, Beagle and pouliot.

Canucks fan here. Overall a great trade. Guddy just didn't bring enough "intangibles" to compensate for the lack of defensive capability. For all of the "toughness" that Guddy was supposed to bring, I can count on 1 hand the number of times that he actually got fired up and fought or landed a bone crunching hit. I'm not saying that he has to play that way. I think the fighting is a waste of time and doesn't do anything to prevent liberties taken with star players (I would have liked to see a few more hard hits from him but he didn't have the speed to keep up with guys). I'm just pointing out that for those who think toughness is valuable and necessary in today's NHL, Guddy is not that guy. What is necessary is keeping pucks out of your net and in this category Guddy was measurably terrible. I mean no disrespect, I think he's a great guy, just not a good hockey player at the NHL level.
I'm not excited really excited for Pearson. I hope he can find some offence but I'm doubtful. The contract is too much money for 15 goals on the 3rd line which is probably where he should be. The worst part of it is that he adds another overpaid declining forward to a team that already has Erikson and Sutter. Put those guys together and you have a $14M dollar checking line. Plus all those contracts that extend past Petterson's entry level deal. If Pete continues on his current trajectory then things will get pretty tight when he and Boeser eat $21M of cap space. I'm hoping Pearson can be a legit 2nd line winger for Bo and that Benning can move one or both of Erikson and Sutter in the offseason. Even if all he gets is late round picks or mediocre prospects I'm ok with it.
