Hes the only guy in his tier of defenseman that cant consistently care on defense. Other guys might not be good at it but they at least try. The gliding back when you are the one who gave it away…. why not just keep skating and try to get your body on the guy or be there in case of a rebound? Its just not acceptable at any professional level.
Hes a perfect fit for what EDM does offensively. He doesnt have to do a lot and gets lots of time and space with the puck and does well with it. The degree of difficulty is much lower than what Hughes etc deal with but anyone who thinks Bouchard is anywhere near Makar or Hughes offensively are just plain wrong so that isnt really worth addressing. Hes a consistent 2nd tier offensive defenseman and his contract is fine for what he does. But hes got to find it in himself to give a damn, especially when its his fault on the play. He didnt seem to have this effort problem in the playoffs so it seems like he just mails it in when he doesnt think it matters
He reminds me of Jake Gardiner for the Leafs. Bouchard is a way, way better player, but some of his defensive gaffs and lackadaisical play give me the same vibes.
Evan Bouchard is a liability on defense, and his offensive game consists of a heavy slap shot, nothing more. Those 2 together make him invaluable and how any team, let alone the Oilers are paying him 10.5 million a year is beyond me. I’ve been saying it for the past 2 years and I’ll keep saying it. Bouchard is a 4th forward with a deadly slap shot from the blue line. That’s it that’s all. We all know this…what’s new?? He showed what he’s doing now back in junior and if he was a 2 way D the guy would’ve been a top 3 pick. He’s trash in his own zone and he’s a 4th forward. Simple.
as a hockey fan the oilers demise brings me great joy. canadian media is an absolute joke and neither them nor the fans deserve a cup win. they will point the blame anywhere they want when they should be pointing the finger at themselves and their team management.

Simple answer, wheres the coaches here what are they teaching these players, In your own end you have 3 options if you have the puck, you ice it, carry it out, or pass it out which means the other team has to tag up before entering the end again, if you dont you failed, same thing between the 2 blue lines, my point is YOU dont give it away simple rules for professional players ooooops thats simple rules for pee wee players.
Bouchard isn’t horrible, but can you really trust him against a Florida team when he has at least 3 egregious defensive plays per game one of which usually results in a goal?
Take that Florida series. Him and ekholm both made egregious errors that shifted momentum.
I’d rather have less offensive upside and have someone more responsible.

Bouchard is essentially the NHL version of Trent-Alexander Arnold. A defender who is exceptional at offense, but shockingly terrible at defense, which should be their main job

Offensive Dmen in the NHL are probably the most frustrating of all types of skaters. They usually have mediocre defensive skills and can be streaky offensively. The only way for them to get past being a defensive liability is if theyre consistently putting up points.
Let me start with I love the player as a person and I wish him and his family nothing but the best. But it sort of became this way for Pietrangelo those last 2 years in Vegas after the cup win. Guy just became a defensive liability and was always working through injury, I really don't blame him but it was clear he was really only focused on setting up scoring chances or shooting, and then if it was turned over or a rebound went to the opponent he couldn't get back to cover. Was always one of my favorite knights, but I started to get sad watching him play and getting annoyed at how many chances he caused for the other team.

Thats how he is on defense. He is a skilled player who only has one gear. He never skates back hard or fights for position.
