the problem is no backup, 30 year old, a year from back surgery,, if he is overplayed, we are screwed, so yes it is a problem. we can be easily 4-16 in the first 20 games because no qualified back up
Throw them numbers away boys, cause you're right – the defense SUXS! They're soft! Lightweight! We all know Shaef can dance but he can't save this defensive squad at age 18. Now that there's some length on the offensive youth, it's time to upgrade current defenseman.
Sorokin is surrounded by lack of clearing pucks/man away from net, losing puck battles, getting caught out of position – the D-men aren't big enough, strong enough, fast enough, and play with enough grit, and nobody can run a powerplay, except for DeAngelo (who is not a defensive D-man) but he has high IQ, offensive minded and aside from the rook, the rest must go! You have to help your goalie so he is in the best position available, and this core ain't helping Sorokin one bit!
Some has to do with the forwards being better around center ice, backchecking harder, pinching bodys, winning puck battles, not giving up odd man rushes but really that's not where the pain is – it's in the defense.
Definitely a concern, no need for the panic button yet and it can’t be turned around but not a good start. Especially when the backup is not proven to be able to pick up the slack.
In my opinion, one of the most overrated players in all of the NHL. Outside of the Vezina finalist season, where is the consistent "elite" play? When has Ilya had a 10 game stretch where he stole us a bunch of games? Hope I'm wrong and this message ages poorly.
I think we’ve seen the best of Sorokin early in his career, he’s no longer that goalie. He’ll have some good games here and there. He gives up AT LEAST one soft goal per game, then he’ll look spectacular on some saves, and give up another soft one.
Also, if it’s a breakaway against him, I know that 90% of the time it winds up in the net. Same goes for shootouts, he seems to lose 90% of those. He’s really never been clutch, outside of 1 playoff series win 5 years ago.
Plus, he will be gone by the time the rebuild comes to fruition in 3-4 years. By then the team will be stacked , have to pray one of the drafted goalies is ready for when Sorokin is ready to be an Ex-Islander.
not a concern , the d is , has faced and saved the most high danger shots so far this year already it is the garbage left around the net that needs to be cleaned up better
The real pending disaster is better offense at the cost of defensive structure. Time to catapult slow foot Mayfield 'miss the net' Pulock for younger players. Also, get rid of the older legs that can't keep up with todays pace. Too many vets entering the frame 2 steps behind.
He hasn’t been the same since the elimination goal against the Canes in the playoffs a few years ago. He easily gets beaten over his blocker. He is NOT ELITE
Just got home form todays game against the Jets and its a major concern. That goal between the pads was horrible. He doesn’t look good over three games. Now with that said the Isles defense is not giving him any help they look like 💩.
Feel like sorokin gives up a goal a GM where it can be a long shot or just one that should be saved but some of the goals today he'd have no chance. It is what it is, our team desperately needed a make over so trying to just enjoy watching the new guys. If Lou was still here we wouldn't even try to rebuild. I'd like to see shabonov on the pp with barzy and schaefer
I get that all teams need a solid or even average defense and an elite goalie can be the difference BUT why are people coddling goalies. It’s okay to say they are playing like crap

2 really bad luck goals caused by Romanov and Mayfield. The D (outside of Schaefer) need to step up. Ilya will be ok.

The defense is terrible. I’m not concerned about Ilya. I’m much more concerned about the defense.
The fact is we gotta get rid of all the 30 plus bums,Mayfield, cizikas, lee, and pageau. And the younger kids need to start and take the team over
