The San Diego Gulls opened their 10th Anniversary season in dominant fashion Friday night, blanking the Coachella Valley Firebirds 5-0 at Acrisure Arena.
Captain Ryan Carpenter set the tone late in the first period, burying the season’s first goal off feeds from Nico Myatovic and Roland McKeown to put the Gulls ahead 1-0. San Diego carried that momentum into the second, where Tim Washe and Judd Caulfield each found the back of the net to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Gulls didn’t let up in the third, as Sasha Pastujov and Matthew Phillips connected for a pair of goals to seal the victory. Pastujov and Phillips each finished with a goal and an assist, while Jan Myšák added two helpers in the offensive outburst.
Ville Husso was unbeatable, stopping all 26 shots he faced to earn the shutout. San Diego outshot Coachella Valley 44-26 and killed off all three Firebirds power plays in a complete team effort to kick off the 2025-26 campaign.
