Elliotte Friedman on Connor McDavid’s contract extension, expectations for the Canucks and more
Hockey Night in Canada Insider Elliotte Friedman joined the guys and shared his reaction to Connor McDavid’s contract with the Oilers and what he expects from the Canucks ahead of Thursday’s opener.
Wow McDavid and his agent can't do math. Perfect for the Oilers but he should have went to free agency. But this tells TO, NY, LA and Florida teams to make space when he becomes available.
way to go connor. you've done your part. the ball is in bowman's court now. look to see the oil trade every draft pick for the next 3 -4 years and prospect they have. what do hughes and eichel do now? the jet's core is starting to get the rap that the leaf's core has been getting for the last 4-5 years…can't win the cup.
After Kaprizov's massive contract, McDavid's signing shows that his biggest priority is to win the Stanley Cup in Edmonton, but he is also giving the Oilers a deadline – if Bowman cannot assemble a winning team (get a goalie, for crying out loud), he will walk in two years and the Oilers will get nothing in return. I can respect McDavid for taking this stance – just because he is revered in Edmonton does not mean he can only play there…
McDavid signed at this number to give the Oilers more cap space but it's also a smart decision. He can sign for way more in 2 years. He can also tell the fanbase in 2 years that he did his part and wasn't greedy. If he leaves in two years, he won't be the bad guy.
I love how all these other fan base all say 2 years n hes gone hahah he took a discount he wants to win in edmonton! I remember sid in 2018 saying would u bet your mortgage mcdavid stays if they dont start winning 😅😅😅 and theh didnt start to win til 2022
Good for Connor on this. He’s taking a MASSIVE discount. He definitely wants to win. This is like Crosby at $8.7M his whole career. Just disgustingly under-paid. Big respect to Connor.
Barkov injury completely changed his calculus. The next two years are wide open for Edmonton to win the SC. All they need to do is take care of business in the West.
Best move for the league. This constant 1 upping of pay is killing the people who pay for it (the people wanting to actually go to the games). He is making very solid money so there isn't a reason to ask for more if it suits his needs. Job well done #97
Sad that the Oilers or any Canadian team will never win the cup again. Since Bettman took over in 94 he has been rigging the finals. To prove it he has not allowed two Canadian teams to ever meet in the finals. He uses the referees to rig the finals – non calls against the American team and nit picking against the Canadian team. The first victim was Vancouver in 94 right after he moved the NHL HQ from Toronto to New York. Captain America 31 – Canada ZERO. 31 Years is not a "conspiracy". 31 years is not a "coincidence" either. McDavid and Matthews will eventually end up playing for US teams and that is what he is banking on.Since he always knows who will win in the finals – nothing to stop him from betting on it either. Totally corrupt and crooked as a snake. THIRTY ONE YEARS AND COUNTING.
6:13 Cooter did in the preseason what you pretty much never see Canucks prospects do straight out of the draft: do a lot of the little things that a mature hockey player does to impress the coaches. And if he didn't do them right away, a coach corrected him and he went from there. I gotta say, I had no idea he was going to stand out this much. And I know it was pre-season – he'll face stiffer competition this week. But he's earned his shot. It's just refreshing that he didn't have to be a top 10 pick to shine at all. And the guys seem to love him already. Show us what ya got!
Do the math – with cap going up by 30 % over the next two years, McDavid would make more with 2 years at $12.5MM and then sign 6 at say $25MM ($175MM total) than he would with 8 at $18MM (league high this year) for $144MM total. Katz has the dough to pay him whatever he wants but this year is too cap constrained – there is no team that would pay him $25MM this year (is he worth that?) and still be a contender there would be no money left for a supporting cast. To say again – there is no contending team out there with cap space to take on $18 – 20 MM that he could get today unless they dumped their existing high priced talent so not really a contender's move. So its not really team friendly in the end – it's McDavid friendly with a huge payoff for him in two years. Sure he could leave in two years but that's a low risk bet by management – he likes it there, likes his team, likes ownership, and is on arguably the best team to win a cup soon.
20 million in cap with Eckholm, Kulack, Henrique, Skinner, Pickard all UFA. Re-signing or replacing eats up that 20. They have nobody internally to fill any of those spots
Meanwhile nucks have just as much with Kane, Blueger, Forbort the biggest names on expiring deals which can all be filled internally, leaving a lot to add a big name like Kempe. Myers and Lankinen theoretically could be replaced by Willander and Tolipilo without skipping a beat, opening up even more cap space. Everyone thinks this season is the do or die but with so much youth on the precipice in important positions a very young team, a great UFA crop (hopefully) I'm really intrigued for next summer.

Was nice of Connor to wait for Friedman to be one Donnie and Dhali to react to the contract.
Mcdavid understands Edmonton is the best for Canada. Cities like Vancouver & Toronto are just crime wave condo sanctuaries. 😮😂😅😊
McDavid just made it easy to pick his deadline destination team next year. 😊
Yeah, because there was NO WAY Mc?Defense? deserved more than $1 Million more than EP-Pouty !! 🙄
Imagine signing a 2 year cheap deal to give your team a chance to win and the GM signing a #4 dman to 7M+
Hronek and dpetey are steals
2 years till we drink coiler fan tears when he walks with no cup!
What are the chances of this hometown discount filtering down to the fans by way of lower ticket prices?

A BJ is always better than a Yank, right?
Intelligent informed entertaining discussion, great stuff as always gents!
Rick said Connor was gone at least 4 times this summer. Complete bozo
What a clown show. McDavid wants a cup and knows in three years the cap will be much higher
Cry harder Dhaliwal
Matthews is going to Edmonton. 👍
Why is Jon Stewart doing a sports show.
Can Connor play goal? Oilers suck

What an ultimatum to Oilers management.

Does quinn hughe take a discount?? To play in new jersey???

I wonder if they go after Panarin now

That shirt fits in 🌈 Vancouver

Mcdavid will more than make up that Monday in advertisement deals. Other stars in the nhl will not have that same opportunity.
McDavid is a class act, no greed here.
NHLPA will not accept this offer
Yo, Petey. You have the potential to be the number 2 or 3 centre in the west. Are you up for it?
Vancouver Canucks suck Ass
Flames are a manure pile 😮
Ya, Donnie, that was not what Kariya and Selanne signed for in Denver, not even close. Look it up. Quite the story.
Pull back on the gain please.
You can bet the league and officials will do everything in their power to let the Coilers win it all this year.

When I think of a captain doing anything to help your team I approve of this signing. McDavid $12.5 .Pettersson 11.6 .
Any questions?
