Many fans assume NHL players stay rich for life, but countless stars have lost their fortunes through addiction, bad investments, fraud, or misplaced trust. This video explores how millions can vanish even for elite athletes.

Goaltender Robin Lehner filed for bankruptcy in 2022 despite a $25 million contract, overwhelmed by failed business deals and debts that reached into the tens of millions. Jack Johnson earned nearly $50 million, but after giving his parents control of his finances, he was left with almost nothing when they borrowed millions against his future earnings. Darren McCarty, a four-time Stanley Cup winner, went bankrupt in 2006 after addiction, gambling, and debt forced him to auction off personal memorabilia.

Even legends weren’t immune. Bobby Orr lost around $25 million after his agent, Alan Eagleson, embezzled funds and withheld a contract offer that could’ve made him part-owner of the Bruins. Bryan Berard, defrauded by financial advisers, lost up to $6 million after already surviving a career-threatening eye injury. Derek Sanderson, once the highest-paid athlete in the world, squandered his fortune on partying before later rebuilding his life as an adviser helping players avoid his mistakes.

Some cases were heartbreaking. Joe Murphy, the 1986 first overall pick, suffered severe brain injuries that led to addiction, homelessness, and public struggles with mental health. Sergei Fedorov lost roughly $40 million in a Ponzi scheme and had to keep playing in Russia to recover. Theo Fleury, despite earning $41 million, saw his wealth disappear through addiction before turning his life around as an advocate for trauma survivors. Evander Kane, still an active player, declared bankruptcy in 2021 with $26.8 million in liabilities, largely tied to gambling losses.

Together, these stories reveal how even massive paychecks can’t protect against poor decisions, exploitation, or personal demons—and how quickly fame and fortune can collapse.
