Jeff Marek from The Sheet stops by to give his final verdict on the rookie centre’s chances of making the team. Jeff also weighs in on Filip Chytil’s great September and the latest contracts handed out around the NHL and how that might impact Quinn Hughes’ offer from the Canucks. He also gives us a scouting report on potential first round pick Caleb Malhotra, as the Abby Canucks coach’s son is ripping it up in the OHL.

canucks could beat literally anyone and they would still have a "ehhhh idk" mentality about the team lmao. literally just beat the oil in OT who have literally just made 2 cup finals and we went 5 for 6 on the PK
Get off my lawn people.
No to Cootes. Asset management, and its the only way you mess up his development .
50 point 2nd line centers, isn’t that good? Looking at league averages and it seems 50 points is nothing to shrug off. I’m sure there may be a few that hit above that but it’s exactly that, only few.
Quinn wants to win a cup. Getting paid the biggest bucks, does not necessarily equate to helping the team field the best shot at the cup.
I agree with Jeff on Cootes. He's exceeded expectations immeasurably, but it's not going to hurt him to spend a year in junior and be ready for the NHL next season. Seriously, this team isn't a contender, so why would we blow a year of ELC? I know it's fun for fans, but there are only 2 places you want to be if you're an NHL team – a playoff team/contender or a bottom feeder challenging for a 1st overall pick. Cootes potentially puts them in the mushy middle. Maybe they make the playoffs and get tossed in the 1st round. I'd rather burn a year of ELC when they're a bona fide playoff team.
Manny's son? Why am I not surprised. I liked Manny from the first game I saw him in.
If a guy has a broken leg and recovers from it, do you continue to wonder where he’ll break it again. I think not if a guy suffered from concussions do you continue to wonder whether the next hit will bother him I think so. So even if Chytl looks really good You know one hit could be his last unfortunately. We can’t be satisfied with him.
One day, the Vancouver Media will decide that the Sky is indeed not falling for The Vancouver Canucks. And on that day, Gary Bettman will award a franchise to the Devil as his domain has truly frozen over.
Price is so negative. Chytil has looked good.
Everyone is wrong on Cootes. The details he brings to puck retrievals, board battles and net front presence is already better than Ratty and Bluegar…. He’ll be a 40 + guy NOW and guaranteed to be a + 10 at years end. Don’t shelter this kid… fly him close to the sun and reap the benefits
They will probably sent Cootes down in the ahl for one more year he needs to work on his strength toughness playing agians bigger men's in nhl.
I worked in night clubs in van for years and manny malholtra was the coolest nicest dude.. not shocking his kid is as well…
Filip Cheeto has the ability to hang on to the puck for an extra half a second, we'll see how many points he can put up this coming season…
He changed my mind. Maybe it's not worth losing someone else and we could keep cootes in our backpocket, but in the back of my mind I still think what better development then to play NHL games? still a tough call
Hey, kids! If your team offers a player $20 million and he turns it down, it means he thinks you have a bad team with incompetent management.
"What else can we do?" You can have a plan to win that's more than throwing all your money at one player and hoping.
"Teams want bastards!"
"Malhotra is a great kid!"
So…?
>Hughes' brothers salaries:
-Quinn = 7.85 mill/yr.
-Jack = 8 mill/yr.
-Luke = 9 mill/yr.
…hmm, something's completely in the wrong order here…
Viktor Tikonov said of Bob Gainey, "the best player in the world in the technical skills of the game". The highest praise from one of the greatest coaches of all time.
What are we even talking about here boys. Asset Management over Arshdeep Bains and Linus Karlsson? They are worth 0 in this league they are not assets. Not that they can't contribute but you can find replacements for these guys in 2 seconds.
noone is making you be "devil's advocate guy", Blake. You chose that role years ago. Dont blame them lol
Chytil played the same way after he got traded from the Rangers as he has through the pre season. That’s his game. His health is the issue.
O’Connor does nothing he is fast but doesn’t really hit isn’t nasty doesn’t score not sure what is role is would rather see Sasson just as fast seems like he can score younger cheaper
What a dumb take from Marek. If Cootes is good enough to help the team (and he certainly looks it) who cares about losing an AHL asset like Bains.
