I am out in the woods backpacking and before I lose service I just want to say that there is no better option than Lane. There is no other player around the corner who you’ll be able to sign that lane would prevent you from signing that will make it worth waiting. Sure get the best team friendly deal you can possible negotiate, that’s your job, but know that there is no silver lining to missing out on lane. There is no added flexibility that makes it worth it, even if Dobson and Matheson play amazing and Partrick Laine returns to peak form. Like there is no situation where waiting on Lane works. Tax filing is extremely complicated. Lane’s agent doesn’t want the compensation package to include a RCA (Retirement Compensation Account), because that would assume that Lane will retire in the US which isn’t 100%. Imagine living in Montreal your entire career and then now needing to move somewhere else to try to save some tax. Lane also has dual citizenship so living in Canada post-retirement wouldn’t be unfathomable.
So the two parties are apart from a net dollar point of view, but they aren’t far apart.
The guy has played 1 season. It was a good season, he put up a lot of points. But he’s nowhere close to a 9M defender right now. Based on projection and cap growth still probably wise, but he’s going to have to develop a defensive game to go with all the assists.
