  1. This contract will make it hard to sign decent bottom-6 players. The Leafs struggled with this problem for years when Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander & Rielly ate half the cap space.

  2. Not good for Minnesota fans because next year's tickets will go way up. And definitely not good news for oiler fans. Because will the Oilers give Mcdavid 20 mill a season if so their tickets will double.

  3. As a Wild fan, I completely thought he’d sign for 3-4 years at $17mil per, but 8 years, PLUS this coming season, I am THRILLED that’s he’s here for 9 more years

  4. Great player no doubt but is he in the same class as the greats like McDavid, MacKinnon, etc? He scores a lot but doesnt really take over a game the way they do.

  5. Will the circle be unbroken? The next superstar Wild player will get the same treatment, and the next one, and the next one. We have to get past round 1 of the playoffs! That’s the real challenge.

  6. Is this contract worse than when Suter and Parise were both signed?? At least Suter was a legit #1 defenseman for most of the contract (that he played)…

  7. Not a Wild fan but think he is way overpaid. I know it is about timing but he isn't the best player in the league. Just happened to have this contract come up. And can he stay healthy. We will see.

  8. Any hockey fan should have an understanding that if kirill hit free agency he would have likely got much more money from another team. Therefore, this is a win for the wild

  9. Minnesota was between a rock and hard place and they chose one path hoping it is the best outcome. In 5 years time we'll have a better idea how this plays out.

In the meantime, they hope that cap space continues to project upwards. Will that be the case or could it go flat again?

Beyond that, were there plausible alternatives to signing KK?

During the 2017-18 season, the Sens traded away Karlsson for a fair to better than expected return. Could the Wild have done the same or better? The Canes have traditionally managed their cap space well too. Could the Wild have taken anything out of the Canes' playbook to better manage the KK contract situation?

On the flip side, maybe signing was a great marketing move from the Wild's fan perspective. One reason for rooting for one's team is to see star players develop and flourish within one's favourite team. So while the Wild may or may not have a SC run in them over the next few years, the fans may be treated to some exciting hockey and that may be enough for the Minnesota Wild fan.

What else? Some have mentioned KK is injury prone. My definition of injury prone is if the player has had at least 2 seasons where he plays less than 50% of his team's regular games. Given this, KK's health seems good so far.

  10. Would you like to see a rule that states no player can have a no move/trade in the last year of their contract…?, would protect teams from players just walking away for nothing

  11. Ridiculous. How much money is enough? stupid greed, Now there will not be enough to pay anyone else.

  12. iirc was watching 32 thoughts when a viewer had a question, "can a player sign a contract at a percentage of the cap" and the answer was no— but isn't that essentially what the Wild are doing here by allowing his salary to increase every year?

  13. Didn’t know Labanc had left Columbus. Sad he doesn’t have a team. Loved him on the Sharks. Huge role in the game 7 five minute power play comeback against Vegas. Hope he finds somewhere to play.

  14. Whats the point behind "league minimum salary" with the bonus money? Whats the actual benefit… Just the "up front cash" every July 1?

  15. SAD… KIRILL WILL NEVER WIN A STANLEY CUP. WILD CANT EVEN GET PAST THE FIRST ROUND. AND IM A WILD AND KIRILL FAN

  16. As a Habs fan, I hate it. We still have to give out contracts to Hutson and Demidov, and this will heavily make it harder to keep them at a reasonable price.
