We’re a week away from the start of the NHL season, and the Winnipeg Jets have nearly set their starting line-ups for the year. What remains for the team to sort out before the season starts? Are there any surprises, or is what we’re seeing what was predicted from the start? How will the Jets navigate potentially tricky health situations for the next month and a half? Can Winnipeg avoid falling too far behind in the playoff race? Why are players like David Gustafsson sitting deeper on the depth charts than they should be?

Wild card team at best this season
And once again, the Jets saying that young players would have opportunities to step into key roles on the team was proven to just be lip service. Salomonsson being sent back to the Moose is just a joke. The team NEEDS another puck moving defensemen that has the ability to play in the top 4. And a young guy that just turned 21 and has a high ceiling would have been perfect. But again, this organization prioritizes older veterans over prospects. And they can't risk not playing Stanley, while also stringing along Ville.
This is why I do firmly believe young players in the future will refuse to play for this organization. And it won't have anything to do with the weather or the small market size, and have everything to do with how this organization develops prospects. In his modern NHL, you have to give some of your best prospects a real opportunity to make the team and see how they perform.
This front office has no imagination. The Wild signed Brock Faber to an ELC right after his last collegiate game, and he was in the line-up 2 days later, with the team in the mix of a playoff push. Same with Ryan Leonard with the Caps and Jimmy Snuggerud with the Blues. The constant need to maintain the status quo is strangling this team's chance at a cup.
And this further hammers my point home about the fact that the Jets would have been better off letting Pionk walk instead of extending him. Jets extended a player whose metrics drop off dramatically when not paired with his normal partner. Not extending him would have left that RHD spot open for the likes of Salomonsson to fill. But again, loyalty & friendship stood in the way what was actually better in the long-run.
And also, we're right back where we started the last 2 seasons, with Namestnikov being the 2C. The guy is not a top 6 player. He's cannot produce at a clip comparable to a 2C. And this 2C issues have been an issue for years.
Chisholm is with the Caps now.
Agree with what you’re saying. 15 years of Chevy and this is what we see. Frustrating when you think what this team could be with a more aggressive approach. Trades could have been made to fill the Ehlers spot but they are so afraid to use their Prospects and established Players.Instead we see conservative “safe” moves. There’s never a spot available to let a Prospect develop. Signing Pearson was a nail in the coffin for the kids. Sad that Winnipeg may just become a “ nursing home” for Players beyond their prime years who want to still play. Hoping Toews still has some pop in his game. It won’t go over well with real fans to see a big step back after what they did last year. Hope I’m wrong.
