Taking the Positives from the Carolina Hurricanes Despite the 4-2 Preseason Loss

It looked like a game where the Carolina Hurricanes were going to cruise to a win, instead four third-period goals from the Florida Panthers made that a moot point. Outside of the loss that was given in the jaws of potential victory, what positives can be taken away from the game where we saw a plethora of NHL regulars? On the Thursday Edition of Locked On Hurricanes, host Zach Martin begins the show by talking about the early chemistry of Nikolaj Ehlers, Sebastian Aho, and Seth Jarvis. What early signs did Zach notice when it came to the potential top line for the Hurricanes? What did those three show on the 5v5 and on the top power play unit with Andrei Svechnikov and Shayne Gostisbehere? Secondly, Zach gives some praise to Felix Unger Sorum and Bradly Nadeau as the youngsters looked solid in their second preseason game of 2025, following their okay performance back on Monday. Finally, Zach concludes the show with how impressed he was with Svechnikov and Jesperi Kotkaniemi as those two guys look to take a step in 2025-26 for the Hurricanes. All of that, and more, on the latest episode of Locked On Hurricanes.

  1. Preseason no need to panic. I did not think Ehlers looked all that good last night. I felt he looked outclassed on that line with Aho and Jarvis. He missed many assignments. Poor defensive play. One that lead to a goal by Fl. Again it's first game as a line and it will improve. I do not watch games as a fan would but more like a coach who is familiar with this system. That line ended -3 against AHL.

KK and Suzuki lines were the better all round lines.
So why isn't Suzuki in play for making this squad? He is always in the right spot. He is a playmaker. He lead the Wolves in points last year as a 1C. Was an AHL ALL-STAR and not just so Chicago would have a rep. He and Morrow were both selected. Suzuki is a better option than both Stanker and Jankowsi. Don't get me started on Jost or Jaaska at center.
Suzuki played a solid game last night scoring the Canes first goal. He is also a good option for PP2C as he is a playmaker. Also it fills a need as the Canes are bad in shootouts and Suzuki is very good on shootouts. As someone who used to get paid for evaluating center's I don't understand why Suzuki is overlooked.

  2. Unger-Sorum was misused in Chicago as they put him at center and I feel it disrupted his development. This is my fear with Stankhoven.

  3. Imagine, all those shots on goal and only two went in…. yes, only preseason, and really early yet, a little time and I have confidence everything is going to gel and work well together.
