Nils Hoglander breakout potential for Canucks & Why did the Oilers extend Podkolzin?

Nils Höglander is quietly becoming one of Vancouver’s most interesting stories. In this episode of Locked On Canucks, we dig into what makes Höglander a prime breakout candidate — and contrast that against Edmonton’s move to lock in Vasily Podkolzin for three years, which might be risky given his production.

🔍 Why Höglander Could Explode in 2025–26
Höglander has shown flashes of elite pace, tenacity, and puck instincts. Many around the league have considered him undervalued.
He’s already got NHL experience, which gives him a leg up over new prospects.
His ability to pressure plays, drive offense from the wing, and chip in defensively gives him a all-round toolset.
If given consistent opportunity, he could turn what was once a role player status into something much more.

⚠️ Podkolzin’s Extension: Smart Move or Misstep?
Edmonton recently signed Podkolzin to a 3-year extension, worth $8.85 million total / $2.95M AAV starting 2026–27.

  1. Hoggy is better. A terrible season for him last year is almost identical to Podz at his best. Podz does win on physicality but thats it.
