Johnston: Shattenkirk trade doesn’t make sense for Leafs right now

NHL insider Chris Johnston says he understands the Kevin Shattenkirk-Leafs rumours, but doesn’t think they’ll make such a big splash at the deadline, to interrupt their great, young, close knit group of players.

  1. Everything will have to go right for the leafs to sign him. Term, $'s, free agency. They need the cap space for Matthews, Marner, Nylander, etc… Down the road.

  2. what if they just wait for him to become a free agent (barring he doesn't resign) then get him for nothing

  3. Shattenkirk for Krug on BOS (Highly doubt it, but if BOS the team, I guess)
Shattenkirk for Mcdonaugh NYR Most likely
Shattenkirk for Gostisbehere PHI (Best option from PHI, or Provorov)
Shattenkirk for Gardiner TOR (Idk if that will happen, but tor aint givin reilly away)

  4. Why give up assets when he's a free agent at the end of the year? Right now the Leafs should be standing pat this isn't the year they are winning the cup. A little winning and people want to win now. We need to keep our assets and keep building.

  5. I don't get why media has these pointless discussions…why the F would Leafs management make a huge push for this guy when he's a UFA at season's end? Burke or Nonis isn't our GM anymore, lets stop talking stupid hypothetical situations. The leafs management will not trade for him if it means giving up any of the core pieces we have.

  6. He's going to Tampa, Blues need a good goalie Tampa needs to make the playoffs. I could see Bishop-Shatinkirk trade. Maybe Krechi-Shatenkirk

  7. OK ITS GOING TO BE NYR, BECAUSE…
    1. PLAYOFF CONTENDERS (CUP)
    2. SHATTY LOVES NY
    3. WILL IT BE A FREE AGENT SIGNING? Because NYR has no one close to shatty except McDonaugh, and we know that's not going to happen.

  8. The Leafs will inquire about him, but very doubtful it happens. Leafs won't trade anything premium for a potential rental. The biggest advantage to acquiring him at the deadline is negotiation rights and to see if he does well with the Leafs system. If he did really well in the two months after the deadline, it would be easier to justify a long term deal.

    But its 99% not happening
