Amazed they ranked that high, Tampa always seems to get good value out of the draft no matter where they pick.
say what you want about Edmonds.. he is closer physically than a -04 born, and for a team that needs cheap players right now, why not? put him in the AHL and see what you got…
My issue with Howard is that he needs elite linemates around him in order to activate his dynamism. Choosing to go to UMD, a university known for older defensive grinders that doesn’t produce high quality NHL forwards (Mason Raymond was the last solid NHL forward to come out of Duluth) is questionable. Howard would be better suited at Minnesota or Michigan where he would be playing top 6 with elite linemates that would continue the dynamic playmaking and scoring we saw at the NTDP. I just feel that him going to Duluth is a waste because it could turn an elite passenger into a middle six type who isn’t special anymore
With Connor Kurth, the issue I have is that his skating is pretty bad and means he won’t keep up against elite NCAA competition. Additionally, choosing to go to Minnesota, where he’ll be buried for a few years, stagnating his offensive development, isn’t great. I would rather see him at Nebraska Omaha, Ohio State, or Notre Dame where he gets more minutes off the bat, given more O zone time, and forced to learn and make mistakes instead of little ice time.
I don’t see how Kurth’s style of play fits the NCAA game, his brand is very junior, and honestly suits the WHL more, even though Minnesota guys go NCAA 99% of the time.
I absolutely believe the university choice and style of play there does matter for most NCAA route players, and with weak 2022-23 results for Howard and Kurth, it makes me question them a bit more.
Gill and Veinbergs were big reaches with plenty of good overagers still available and some DY guys that I thought would have been better swings. I just don’t trust Q defensemen who don’t score much in their DY in the case of Gill, while Veinbergs feels like the type you could have just waited a year to see how he develops and then make a reassessment. Felt the same with Flinton, Capone, Gagne the past few drafts as well.
