The rookie battle in camp will be compelling for sure. IMO Othmann & Berard will make the team. I wouldn't want to see them on the same line(3rd) though. I'd like to see Othmann with Trochek & Panarin. Berard I see on a third line with Mika & Edstrom. Perreault I think starts in the AHL, Morrow & Laba are depends. Morrow has to show that he can play well in the D-zone & play well on the wall. David Quinn will have to coach him to not hold on to the puck too long in the D-zone & headman it efficiently. Remember also he can play either side. Laba must outperform both Parsinnen & Brodzinski to make the roster. Can he do it? We'll see. Yesterday Trochek was asked about the man on man system in the D-zone. His response was interesting. He said he found that it uses up a lot of energy & that left less energy when transitioning to offense. He noted that Rangers also played zone as well last year in the D-zone.
I've been a big Laba supporter since his draft, always thought he could be one of those "steals" of the draft, but he's best served in the AHL playing 20 minutes a night, PKing and running the 1st PP unit. Barring injuries let him play through Christmas, gaining confidence and learning the system. He's going to be an excellent pro player wherever slotted, but there's 0 need to push him. Juuso Parssinen actually impressed me some in the games I saw him play. I would like to see him get the chance, and down the road he either gets kept for depth or traded, with his value enhanced — in part dependent on how quickly Laba starts to dominate the AHL and how he looks when called up. Besides, you can't underestimate the effect of a waivers' exemption in a training camp, throwing away decent trade assets for nothing isn't really a sound strategy for building a successful organization …. just like pressure cooker accelerated development isn't ideal. There are always exceptions, but this is a good no-cost strategy especially with prospects that battle hard and don't sulk emotionally.
