💯
May go farther but the intensity will not match a reg mtb. Not convinced. People that rode ebikes have been fooled to think this.
Mine got me riding again. The acoustic hangs in the garage collecting dust. Now I ride 3-4 trail rides a week, putting in 10-15 miles a ride. Doesn't take a math genius to understand that 30 to 60 miles a week is a lot more exercise than 0 miles a week.
I've gotten heavier, but my fitness has improved compared to when I first started out on the acoustic mtb. Probably due to the over indulgence of ale, pudding and ageing. I've been on an eMTB since 2021 and have never looked back.
Yeah he bikes are awesome. Totally fix my knee within one year
Just got a Pivot Shuttle LT and on my 4th ride I did 26 miles and over 3,000 ft of climbing in one ride my heart rate average 140ish with my max 167. With 3hr and 50 min of move time and a 4hrs 13 min of elapsed time. Keeping my heart rate in the zone longer.
The ebikes im used to seeing don't need to be pedalled. And it's mostly kids and over weight adults who are using them . Lazy?
E Bikes are a blast to ride and elevate the ride, slide over hard timers.
More miles and time in seat means you are working yourself long on any given ride. Push up hill on an ebike is great and yes you can sustain at pace other than gas out and slow down on a regular bike.
I think the majority of people that on the Antone bike are just afraid they will be shamed for having one. Stop being stubborn and join the joy that’s called e-biking
I bought an e-bike last summer and got in the best shape I’ve been in for a long time because I rode whenever I felt like it versus when I felt ready to go ride. Total game changer.
I’m never off the bloody thing, brilliant. It helps to live near a good forest too😂
Well I’m afraid it’s somewhat subjective.
If you get 2-4 hours a week for riding and you do that on an ebike you will automatically burn less calories than you would on meat power.
If you’re a EMBN journalist and riding is your job sure you will ride more on an e-bike as you actually have the time to become over worked on meat power.
Emtb and mtb’s are just tools use what you want when you want to get the job done. But there are tradeoffs
Emtb is inevitably more fun as it’s less torture on long climbs
But time for time mtb will be a better workout
I can't believe I'm writing this. I'm a ex-racer who always swore I'd never get one, and never owned a car. But I'm 65 now. After 47 years of riding for EVERYTHING my life required, I am so glad I decided to take the electro-plunge. I'm riding everyday again, riding for fun more, and my fitness is improving. The last time I was this psyched to go out every day and hammer was way back in my early days of getting serious, back when I entered my first race. Until recently, I thought that feeling was gone forever.
WELL, THE FEELIN'S BACK BABY!!! IT'S HAMMER TIME!!!
And I still don't have to get a car! BONUS! 🎉
Lovely, great….keep em! 😉
I find my average heart rate is around the same, but there’s less resting and no big spikes from climbing
Careful, your comments are too logical and may make some people upset 🙂
I'm no fan because my steel '87 Kona is still riding. I know that no Tesla or E-bike will still be running nearly 40 years later.
You can't make a blanket statement like that. The vast majority of e-bikes sold in the US are equipped with throttle (cheap Amazon bikes with cadence sensor, rear hub motor) most users use them as mopeds. Mid-drive equipped with a torque sensor, sure.agree
Brought an ebike for my 50th, last month. Still a workout, just means I am enjoying the 6 mile cycle to work in the mornings. Ebikes only make the rider lazy, if the just use the throttle or power assist.
I need a lot more convincing. When I use my brothers E-Bike it feels like I have done nothing compared to my bike.
I started riding an Ebike because as an aging person I had stopped bodybuilding as my recovery was taking too long , and only did cardio , that was ok for a while but after about 10 years the 300km commuting per week made my body look like a cyclist which actually is like a 15 year old high school girl with anorexia. So I went back to weights and the only way I can ride the 50km to work 3 times a week each way and not hit VO2 max and burn muscle is with an Ebike . And I live it I might go for a short ride on my full carbon Dura ace roadbike maybe once a month at best but love the Ebike most days and I’m back to bid arms shoulders and a man shaped body
E-bike or Muscle bike?
The bikes are a lot heavier aswell so you will have to pedal harder
Not sure about this. MTB riders used to be very lean 10 years ago. A lot are obese now.
I rode twice as much as I used to on an analog. Getting out and riding more is not an issue because you never go deep for long and can recover quickly. This is different than a straight analog that I was pinned for the entire ride and then destroyed for two to three days. A 3-4 hour ride on an analog is hard. A 3-4 hour ride on an e-bike is moderate.
I still burn tons of calories but I’m never at Z6 pinning it.
Oh my days…Er yes it will, you will probably loose some fitness and get a littler fat ter etc. as you have a specific amount of time to ride per week, you might put in more miles but those miles are assisted. However it means you do not need to ride as much to keep up with the rest that have been slogging it out all winter sit back get tattoos eat crisps drink 0% craft beer, spend the pension on a bike and mtbvan
It will. If you only ride ebike your climbing strength on a regular bike will diminish even if you ride more often because the motor is doing at least some if not most of the work. Best way to keep your fitness is to mix in regular bike rides at least every couple of weeks. If you ride only ebikes for an extended period then go on a regular bike ride with someone who doesn't eeb you will get dropped on climbs very quickly.
BS.
Absolutely no way your heart is the same
The only people who have a go at us e bikers are jealous people who can’t afford one.
I've given up on this particular debate. At the end of the day who cares? Go out, have fun, it's better than staying home watching TV which is what many of us would do if the fitness barrier remained as high as it does on a regular bike. Who cares if you are getting as much as a workout? You are getting A workout, and that's what counts.
You could argue that biking is cheating hiking. Or that you'd get a better workout carrying your bike on your back for the whole trail.
Point is, having fun whilst getting out, away from your desk, getting the blood pumping, and having fun is the only thing that matters.
I lost all my fitness after moving away from Squamish. I couldn't get back on my bike because it was such a monumental task to get back in shape, and then I got an emtb and put 150km on it in a month. This is after 8 years of getting fat and finding excuses.
So yeah, maybe regular bikes are a better workout, or not, but who cares? I'm out of the house getting a workout and smiling ear to ear.
I am more than happy to accept there are more vigorous workouts available, but I will never give up my emtb because it's the one thing that actually gets me off my ass and my HR to 140 on the regular.
Love my e bike , on normal at weekend as bike broke , hated it , it was so hard .
Manage to ride some unbelievable ups on the e tho .
I think in hours instead of miles now. And its been the best therapy for my damaged knees. I feel like I'm 45 again.
100% totally agree. I went from doing roughly 7 mile rides up to 25+ miles per ride. Because i find it much more enjoyable and comfortable to do. Plus I don't need to drive to and from trails now
If you're going uphill and pedaling you're getting exercise, period.
Basically, for the same amount of energy expended climbing, you end up with more because of more downhill. You’re working other muscles more often that only get worked from the downhill part of it.
I did 43 miles on my Specialized Enduro, I was wishing it had a motor !
If you ride with friends that have acoustic bikes, they’ll get burned out before you…if you’re looking for an aerobic exercise you need to lower the power input
eMTB reopened the game for me, in my early sixties. Now riding bigger and wilder cross country routes than ever, fittest I’ve been in years. Definitely more smiles per mile.
Your knees become weaker though. I’ve taken up running alongside ebiking as I need to build some strength back
I my country an e-bike isn't allowed to push you faster that 25 km/h. So when I average 28 km/h I definitely didn't a strong workout 🫡
This is not true in reality. Unless you are already a super fit bike fanatic who would do multiple laps an a normal bike, the act of having an ebike will not make you push yourself further. 99% of the time people on ebikes go out and do the same 1-2 laps they would have done anyway, and at that rate you are not working as hard.
which will make your more fit, bicep curl with 30 lbs ( natura effort on traditional bike) or 10 lbs. ( e bike's climbing effort). 1 advantage of e bike is that fit rider can have group ride with much less fit riders because with motor, much less effort, fitness is needed.
