Matthew Savoie made quite the impression for the Oilers last, netting two goals in a losing effort to the rival Calgary Flames. Other notable standouts for Edmonton included Connor Clattenburg, and Viljami Marjala. There were fights, hits, and Edmonton almost erased a 4-goal deficit in the third period in the first game of the Rookie Showcase. Hockey is officially back! is their a rookie showcase tonight again?
To many people are putting to much on that game. It’s a rookie game not the Stanley Cup final just chill out. It’s so annoying Oilers fans complain so much.
First day after of the season lets gooo
Shot counter: at least 6 for calgary and at least 5 for Edmonton
Marjala. A name not on anyone’s mind until last night. Clattenburg also brought the fire. Savoie looks fast.
Jonsson was a disappointment.
You and I have gone back and forth but I'm telling you again: Ike Howard is not making this team. Skinner was a healthy scratch for like 10 games because of his 2 way game last year. Ike doesn't even have a 1 way game yet. We better pray he checks his ego at the door
Hockeys back! Good to hear from ya again Austin.
Clattenburg reminded me of podz
No need to discuss, my dollorama crystal ball says not one rookie will make the NHL roster this year
What’s worse is this:
Not only is it behind a paywall, but try to watch the same game on-demand right now. I can’t find it.
I was in attendance there last night and I would like to watch the broadcast version and I cannot even find it. It’s like it doesn’t exist. I can’t find it on the Flames website either.
EDIT:
They’ve now added the full game, so it can be rewatched.
I was at game last night, three stars they announced
First: Matt savoie
Second: some flame guy
Third: Marjala
Also they didn’t show SOGs on jumbotron either lol, there are stats guys in the penalty box area, not sure why they didn’t track
I saw Howard in person, he looks like Jeff skinner in the finals out there. Floating around, just looking at his teammates trying to score and score only. no defense whatsoever ever lol
He did look better in their period, when he moved his feet keeping up with savoie.
We’re toast.
I’m tearing up Jonnson’s rookie card like Sinead O’Conner did with the pope’s (or like AH did with someone’s…)
Quinn Hutson will 100% be a future Oiler with that final goal in the 3rd period with just seconds left.
Ungar will probably start Sunday’s game and you know what, I genuinely hope he surprises me.
One thing people do not realize here is that, while true that Samuel Jonsson only let in 4 goals during those first two periods resulting in a 4-1 deficit. During the third period when Josh Banini was subbed in for Jonsson, Banini let in two goals within 10 to 15 seconds of each other in the 3rd period. That is what lead to the Oilers lagging behind 6-2. Throughout the third period, not only did the Oilers scored those three goals making it 6-5 (1 goal deficit) with 2.0 seconds left, but Banini BARELY faced any shots. Even ignoring that, his form and play style looked TERRIBLE out there. The point here is, if Jonsson was in net during the 3rd period, those two goals would have not gone in whatsoever and the Oilers would have won 5-4……UNBELIEVABLE!
I will say, while Samuel Jonsson didn’t have that good of a game himself, but neither did Own Say (the Flames’ goalie who got completely lit up in the third period and had a worse goals against average than Jonsson) and especially not Josh Banini. In other words, Samuel Jonsson needs some development time in the AHL before making over to the Edmonton Oilers full time. Banini needs time in the ECHL before even touching AHL ice let alone ice from the NHL.
Prospects that caught my eye. I should mention it was only one prospects game so I’m not saying any of this is a lock.
1. Savoie: easily the most dynamic player. Easily a lock to make the team. If him Drai and Pods can find chemistry it can be perfect for our second line.
2. Howard: looks like he could use one year of seasoning in the ahl. I expect him to get atleast a few games in the NHL especially since Hyman may miss a little bit. Only one game tho so I’m not going to put too much into his play.
3. Marjala: looks bigger than I expected, skates well and is good with the puck. Could be our best undrafted guy we picked up.
3. Clattenburg: if he develops according to plan he can become a fan favourite in the oilers bottom 6 in a few years
4. Samanski: a big strong skating guy, he looks like a solid two way guy. A philp type of prospect.
5. Akey: looked good, how he looks this year might impact what we do at the deadline. Maybe a trade chip, or if Emberson falls outta favour we package Emberson for a veteran dman to boost our dcore.
6. Carfagna: his skating really impressed me as well as his ability to make a quick first pass. Reminds me of a Cam Dineen
7. Jonsson: not the greatest night, I can see the oilers loaning him to the SHL this year to play in swedens top pro league to give him one more year of development before he plays with Tompkins in the AHL. In this case the oilers would need to acquire another goalie (trade, waivers, PTO signing)
🔥🔥🔥PURPLE MIC🔥🔥🔥
Johnson was not that bad folks. Made some huge saves, looks good for a goalie not in ahl yet. I was surprises we didn’t lose like 9-1 or something consider were are cup contenders. Our blue lines tho not good at all, but these are big even signed prospects. So our goalie struggled since nobody knew his to defend in front if the crease lol
The most outstanding player beside savoie was Marjala, this guy cooked so hard, we almost came back.
I hope Mcdavid sees the potential the same as I did and resigns soon.
