  1. You're right about Brent Johnson. The Caps have 2 days to sign him to an ELC or they lose his rights, and it looks like they're gonna let him go, and save that contract spot. He's a decent prospect, but with their other RHD prospects like Iorio, Chesley, and Allen all being further along than him, he's simply redundant in that room, but I'm sure he'll land a job somewhere in the AHL. I also just noticed you had Dru Krebs on the pyramid who was let go of like a year or two ago lol

Protas is a guy who I think has real top 6 potential, especially when you look at how his older brother had his own breakout szn in Washington. Aliaksei Protas serves as the blueprint for what Ilya can be at the pro level. Them being in the same organization where they're constantly training together should do wonders for his development.

Still kinda shocked you don't have Leonard in the core tier, but I did see what you're talking about with how he tries to do too much by himself. He needs to know when to reign himself in a little, but he displayed some serious skill when he was out there.

Parascak ironically has the opposite problem in that he's too much a passenger, rather than driver of play. He's a good complimentary winger, but that lack of initiative is the main thing holding him back.

I am super excited for Lakovic. If he takes some pointers from Tom Wilson and Ryan Leonard to add that physical element, he'll be a force on the ice. Even if he doesn't he has the skillset to project as an Anthony Mantha type. A name that sparks very mixed feelings for Caps fans, but a good player nonetheless.

  2. Good objective analysis. I would have ranked Leonard higher. He was generating scoring chances almost every shift and had some of the better offensive advanced stats during the playoffs. If he can start putting pucks in the net this year he's a lock for top 6. He reminds me a bit of TJ Oshie.

  3. Ilya Protas is looking to take the same developmental path as his big brother. If he pans out, the two of them together will be a handful for years to come. Parascak was drafted for his hockey IQ. He's one of those guys who's skill doesn't necessarily stand out, but still finds a way to make things happen with his smarts. He could be a bust, or he might end up surprising a lot of people.

  4. Justin Sourdif just aged out of being a prospect, but which tier would you put him in if he was eligible?

I think Patrick Thomas is underrated, I think he could be a solid 4C leading his line in the NHL. He has the leadership personality and the passing ability to make his linemates look better.

  5. Gotta disagree with Leonard. He went from playing college to NHL playoffs. He was also on the 3rd line playing with Eller as center who is at the end of his career and was an offensive black hole. Put him with a high end center and he'll shine. At the ver least he's a 2nd line center. He has higher offensive upside than Tom Wilson who scored 30+ this year. Not to mention Caps have Carbery as the coach. He'll get the most out of his players. Look how many guys had career years. Cristall almost made the team last year and it was a hard decision to send him down. His skating being an issue was the same knock protas had. Now he has a breakout season. Cristall despite his skating issues has really good edge work. Once he's in the zone hes hard to handle. Caps won't be as strong as they were last year but will still be a playoff team. Biggest question marks are Lapierre and Miro. Really hoping Miro can take the next step.

  6. making the caps will be tough for all of them this year, moleno, sourdif, take two spots, leonard looks bigger so maybe he will match the hype, he seems to have the mental part to make it. cristall just seems to be an ahl guy unless he gets quicker and stronger, caps also have a reborn ethen frank, making this team, i just see leonard out of all the players listed in your teir, but myro may be the next step up guy, lapiere will steo up or used for a trade, i hope lapiere wins the 3rd line center, but does not seem likely if they plan on mcmicael, exciting to be a caps fan, and caps will not regress like many project, their vets are stable and young guys are just getting better. my surprise is ethen frank makes a difference this year.

  7. Some high high praise for Lynden. Leno, Cristall, Hutson and Miro are over him I’d argue even Ilya Protas imo.
