For the 2025/26 Buffalo Sabres, one of the biggest keys is going to be goaltending. One of the big reasons for the Sabres failure to make the postseason in 2024/25 was their November and December swoon where Ukko Pekka Luukkonen and other netminders struggled to keep the puck out of the net. If the Sabres had had a strong backup who could have stolen a game and stemmed the tide, things might have been different. That is what the Sabres hope they are getting with Alex Lyon, a veteran entering his 10th NHL season who has ammassed over 100 starts as a backup. Lyon isn’t flashy, but he is consistent and can make an outstanding save here and there. Will it be enough to push the Sabres goaltending group to the next level?
