Oilers will not be making it to the Finals again for a bit. They blew their 2 chances and I think it's done now.
It's so obvious Johnson is being a cheerleader for the salary increases in exchange for inside information from the agents. Same with Kypreos. McDavid is free to take the big money, but if he does he needs to quit saying it's all about winning. He can chase the big money, or he can chase Cups, but he can't have both. Crosby and Michael Jordan took less so their teams could win, Crosby has 3 Cups, and Jordan has 6 rings. Florida's 3rd line made 15 M last year, and will be around 14M this year. Edmonton's 3rd line was around 5M last year, and will be similar this year. Florida has no players above 10M, Edmonton has 3 over 10M. The math doesn't work. You can't win with all those big salaries. Johnson wants to put it on Edmonton to fill out the roster, but in a cap system there is only so much management can do with all those large salaries at the top end.

Tkachuk from Florida said it best. Without the media putting the big players in news and media interviews before games hurts the players mentally. Tkachuk said in Florida the media isn’t around much and they play way better. If the Oilers want to win the 3 out of 3 chances, the team has to avoid sitting down at all during the playoffs with the media 100% and focus on practice, training and then winning the Stanley Cup.

If McDavid doesn't look like he'll sign in Edmonton, they'll need to move on from him. Two years in a row now, the Oilers haven't had the right team formula to walk away with the cup. The Oilers have a lot of money devoted to too few players. I'm not knocking McDavid, but it is a fact that McDavid was held pointless in games 6 and 7 in both SCFs in both 2024 and 2025.
McDavid, Eichel & Da Thrill … I hope all three reach FA as I cannot see the fireworks next summer 😉 !!!
