Let’s not forget his legendary mask. Simple design , yet intricate at the same time. Took me 30 years to find out the ch logo was hiding in plain sight at the center of it. He refused to givre or sell it to the Hockey All Of Fame. Wonder what’s gonna happen to it now. Also, Dryden’s book on Scotty Bowman is quite remarkable too. R.I.P. M.Dryden.
I was a pre teen when Dryden retired, and at that time I was under the impression that winning Stanley cups was just as normal as having a sunny day. We would criticize Dryden, Robinson, Savard, Gainey, etc for not being good enough. It took years to realize how fortunate we were. In practically 600 games played between Cornell and Montreal (incl. playoffs), Dryden has 85 losses. His stats, on a per season basis, are just out-of-this-world, just as much as Gretzky’s stats were.
Coach, he was a minister in the Cabinet of Paul Martin.
In the 71 playoffs Dryden repeatedly frustrated the Big Bad Bruins who finished the regular season 30-40 points ahead of the Canadiens. Esposito was so frustrated he referred to Dryden as "that giraffe".
Something also to remember was in the 79 SCF vs NY game 1 Dryden played badly and the Canadiens lost, Bowman decided to start Bunny Larocque until in warmup Doug Risebrough bounced a slapshot off Larocque's mask knock him out. Dryden returned won 4 straight and his last cup. Happened right in front of me, never forgot.
